ELISHEBA!

Exodus 6:23 AMPC

Aaron took Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab and sister of Nahshon, as wife; she bore him Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar.

So many people, even Christians have never heard this name and don’t who she is but she’s one of those I call a hidden Heroine of Faith.

I recently saw a post on Facebook about a single mother with four sons, all dressed in military uniforms. Each son served in a different branch: the Navy, the SEALs, the Army, and another division. What an incredible achievement! This woman single-handedly raised powerful, disciplined men who now serve their country with honour. She sat among them like a regal queen, and rightly so. Raising children alone is no easy task—I should know. But raising four boys to become responsible, high-flying members of society? That’s a feat only God can make possible.

This reminded me of the remarkable women in the Bible who is rarely gets mentioned and whose names are largely unknown, like Elisheba. Many don’t realize that Aaron—the brother of Moses and Miriam—had a wife. Elisheba was her name, and she was the mother of Eleazar and his brothers. She gave birth to the lineage of the Levitical priesthood. Aaron was the high priest, and Elisheba, though hidden in the background, was the mother of the priestly line.

She had four sons. Two were punished for their disrespect toward God’s altar, but her third son, Eleazar, succeeded Aaron as priest. Elisheba didn’t seek recognition. She didn’t stand in the spotlight saying, “Look at me, I’m their mother.” Yet her legacy speaks volumes. She was a quiet force behind the scenes, shaping her children with the word of God and guiding them toward their divine purpose.

Not every woman of God has children who follow the Lord. We see this often—even among ministers and pastors. Today, many Christian parents raise their children without emphasizing the importance of serving God. Some say, “They don’t want to go to church,” or “I don’t know why they don’t want to serve God.” But Proverbs 22:6 reminds us: “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”  It is our responsibility as parents to instil godly values in our children.

We don’t know exactly what Elisheba did or how she did it, but we see the outcome. Yes, two sons died due to their own choices—wickedness, selfishness, and greed. This happens today too. Some parents do all they can to raise responsible children, but society’s influence can lead them astray. Still, that doesn’t always reflect the parent’s failure.

Elisheba did her part. Eleazar became a successful priest, present in many key moments of Israel’s journey. She didn’t seek fame or applause. She was a mother who fulfilled her assignment faithfully.

As mothers, we are often called to be cheerleaders from behind the scenes—praying, encouraging, supporting, and guiding our children. Sometimes we must be lionesses, defending and protecting them. But most importantly, we must shape them with the word of God and push them toward the potential God placed within them.

Are you an Elisheba? Are you a single mother? Or a married “single” mother?

Hang in there—you still have work to do. Don’t believe the lie that your child’s future is doomed because the father isn’t present. With God’s help, you can raise your child to be the best they can be. Whether in a two-parent or single-parent household, give your child the best of what you have—your faith, your love, your wisdom, and your prayers.

Elisheba may be nameless to many, unrecognized and uncelebrated, but she fulfilled her divine assignment beautifully. No matter where you are or what your role is, your function is important in God’s hands.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

-        How do you respond when your efforts go unnoticed or uncelebrated—do you still serve faithfully like Elisheba?

-        In what ways can you be more intentional about shaping your children (or spiritual children) with the Word of God?

-        What does it mean to you to fulfil your divine assignment, even if it’s behind the scenes?

-        What lessons can you draw from Elisheba’s story to apply in your own walk of faith?

PRAYER: Father, I humbly surrender myself to You. Use me as You will. Strengthen me to do the work of the Kingdom—whether behind the scenes or in the spotlight. Help me to be the quiet strength that produces the kind of fruit You desire. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
