GOD IS NOT FAR!
Psalm 139:7-10 TLB
I can never be lost to your
Spirit! I can never get away from my God! [8] If I go up to heaven, you are
there; if I go down to the place of the dead, you are there. [9] If I ride the
morning winds to the farthest oceans, [10] even there your hand will guide me,
your strength will support me.
Sometimes it feels like God
is really far away, especially when we’re desperately seeking change or a
miracle. It can seem like He’s just not there—we can’t hear Him, see Him, or
feel His presence at all. But serving God isn’t about how we feel; it’s about
what we know. We may not always feel Him, but we can recognize His beauty and
presence surrounding us. God’s presence is everywhere, even in our darkest or
most distant places.
Jeremiah 23:23–24 “Am I only
a God nearby,” declares the Lord, “and not a God far away?... Do I not fill
heaven and earth?” God is both near and omnipresent, filling all creation.
Even those of us who’ve been
Christians for a long time can struggle with this feeling of distance due to
various reasons—sin, illness, or just life's challenges can cloud our
perception. Our text reminds us that we can never escape from God, we are never
far from Him and He from us. If we can't get away, then He must be nearby.
He promises us that He’ll
never leave us or forsake us. Wherever you are, whatever you’re facing, God is
right there with you. Take Elijah, for instance. In 1 Kings 19, he felt
abandoned and despondent, wishing for death, questioning God’s absence during
his trials. Many of us go through those moments where it feels like heaven is
silent and we’re not getting any signs or answers. David also expressed these
feelings in his Psalms, asking God to hear his cries. He reassured us that no
matter where we go—up to heaven or down below—God is always there. God may feel
far away sometimes, but He’s always with us. In 2 Timothy 2:13, we’re told that
even when we’re faithless, God remains faithful. God’s nearness is not
dependent on our feelings or faithfulness—He remains faithful.
He can’t disown Himself,
which means He’s always going to be where we need Him. And let’s not forget
Hebrews 13:5b, where He says He’ll never leave us alone—never. God is the one
who sustains us. He can't help us from a distance. He’s always near, and if
you’re seeking Him, you’ll find Him. Jeremiah 29:13-14 assures us that if we
seek Him with all our hearts, we will find Him. Psalm 46:1 emphasizes that He
is our refuge and strength, always present when we need help. Whatever we're
facing, He feels it too. Jesus went through everything we’re experiencing now,
so He truly understands our struggles. It’s important not to let anything pull
you away from His presence. When David sang in Psalm 51:11, he didn't ask God
for his throne; he pleaded for His presence. We should crave and desire God’s
presence because He never leaves us. He’s constant and unchanging. What
separates us from God's presence? Well, it can be sin, death, or disconnection
from His word. But Romans 8:38-39 reminds us that nothing can separate us from
God’s love. So even when things seem to create distance, He’s still right there
with us. If you’re feeling distant from God, remember—He hasn’t moved. If
anyone has, it’s us. Let’s make our prayer one of gratitude for this
relationship we cannot take for granted. Not even sin, death, or hardship can
separate us from His love.
