KNOW YOUR ENEMY!
Numbers 13:18 TLB
and see what the land is
like; see also what the people are like who live there, whether they are strong
or weak, many or few;
Do you really know who your
enemy is? From a biblical standpoint, anyone who stands in the way of our
spiritual work qualifies as an enemy. Grasping the nature of your adversary is
essential for both strategic planning and spiritual readiness. It allows us to
judge the challenges ahead, especially when it comes to the strength and number
of those opposing us. This is illustrated in the tale of the children of
Israel, who were promised a land by God.
Their task was straightforward:
Go to Canaan! Explore the land. Understand what they were getting into. Plan
accordingly. But instead of focusing on the tasks at hand, they got distracted
by what they shouldn’t have seen and spoke words that shouldn’t have been
spoken. How about you, are you only seeing what's physical? Are you basing
physical decisions on the spiritual or the other way around? Are past
challenges, disappointments, and mistakes clouding your judgment? Are earlier
experiences affecting what you expect in the future?
Know your enemy. When you
read the Scriptures, what comes to mind? When you look around you, what stands
out? Are you as cautioned against in Proverbs 3:5, leaning on your own
understanding for spiritual matters? With the kind of strategic wisdom that
Moses used to guide the Israelites in assessing the land, we should reflect on:
understanding the spiritual dimensions of our assignment, foes and life and
then shift our viewpoint from weakness to strength, spotting opportunities and
potential in the word by the Spirit. The God we worship doesn’t rely on
numbers; He just needs one willing and capable person. This theme is clear
throughout the Bible.
David faced Goliath all by
himself against a whole army. Samson stood alone against the Philistines. The
Book of Judges often shows God choosing one person over a multitude. We need to
think about preparation and understand our stance before we engage in any
struggle. Spiritual insight helps us do things right. Like a military
operation, we shouldn’t go into battles without a clear strategy. Our faith
should rest firmly on God’s Word. We must confront our fears, as the Scriptures
advise in 1 Peter 5:8, to stay alert to the enemy and be ready to flee. Through
the Holy Spirit, we become an unstoppable force. Keep a mindset focused on
faith instead of fear.
What are you up against? The
Scripture reminds us in Ephesians 6:12, that we wrestle not against flesh and
blood, but against unseen forces of darkness. Our true enemy is not people, but
spiritual forces that work behind the scenes to hinder our progress, sow
confusion, and challenge our faith. How can you combat what you can’t see or
fully grasp just with physical senses? Proverbs 3 suggests that we shouldn’t
rely solely on our own understanding. We ought to trust the Lord to guide us in
every situation.
Know your enemy. Your enemy
isn’t the brother or sister who hurt you. The child who didn’t listen. The
spouse who fell short of your expectations. The sibling who turned away from
you. That friend or mentor who disappointed you. In essence, your enemy isn’t a
physical person; it’s the spirits or demons causing confusion in your life. When
facing personal challenges, just like the Israelites, we need to assess our
problems, acknowledge the authority and power we hold in the spiritual realm
and rely on the power of Jesus’ name to overcome fear.
Trust God completely to
prepare you for the next steps. But through discernment to recognize our
enemies, which equips us to tackle temptations, injustices, and struggles.
We’ve been empowered to overcome the enemy, break the chains of discouragement
and replace fear with faith while standing strong on God’s Word. Let God’s Word
fill you with strength, wisdom, and discernment to recognize and conquer your
enemy.
