STAIRWAYS!
John 1:51 AMPC
Then He said to him, I
assure you, most solemnly I tell you all, you shall see heaven opened, and the
angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man!
Stairways and or stairs are almost
in every building. Sometimes they’re even outside! But they are more than just
structures, stairways serve as gateways to different places. The Bible uses
stairways both literally and symbolically. A well-known one is Jacob’s ladder
from his dream in Genesis 28:10-15. This ladder connected earth to heaven,
signifying a direct link between God and humanity. Stairways pop up in
architecture, too, reminding us of the connection between levels, and floors.
In Solomon’s temple, for
instance, stairs symbolized access to holy spaces, as seen in 1 Kings 6:8.
Jesus said, "I am the way," which really means He’s the only way.
Many are searching for direction, looking to find the right path to their
goals. That path is Jesus—without Him, we can’t get where we want to go.
There’s no other route to God or heaven except through Him, our stairway to
heaven. Take Jacob’s ladder as an example—he found himself at the doorway to
heaven, and the Bible mentions that God was waiting for him up there in verse
13. If we want to reach a destination, we’ve got to climb those stairs.
Some folks might only be on
the first step, unsure or uninterested in moving up; they neither go back nor
forward. Others might find themselves stuck in the middle, unsure whether to go
up or down. And then you have those who’ve reached the top but are just
standing there, not taking that final step into their destination. What’s the
point of climbing if you’re not going anywhere? Stairs connect us directly to
God. In Acts 21:35, we see Paul using stairs as an escape route. So, what
stairs are you overlooking, or what do you really seek? The stairs in the Bible
often symbolize spiritual progress—our journey from earthly life to God's
presence, just like Jacob in his dream. Some people are out there fumbling
around, desperately trying to find the right way or the right stairway, yet
they might even be standing right in front of those stairs without realizing
it. What are you accessing? Where do you need to get to? The Bible tells us in
1 Timothy 2:5 that Jesus is the mediator between God and man, which makes Him
not just the stairway but the only true path—the right and divine way to God. When
we look at buildings and their designs, we naturally seek the stairs that lead
us to different floors, whether it’s the first, second, or beyond. There are
all sorts of stairs: Straight ones, Narrow ones, Steep ones, and Spiral ones. Regardless
of their shape or form, they lead somewhere. Some stairs can be tricky,
requiring a firm grip to navigate safely. But remember, as you climb those
stairs, Jesus is the way. He is our stairway, our direct link to where we need
to go. While on the stairways, don’t forget those ahead of you and learn from
them or those behind you and be an example to them according to Philippians 4:9
and 3:17.
In scripture, stairways
symbolize the process of spiritual growth. This concept comes up prominently in
Genesis 28. The scriptures point to Jesus as our means of elevation, helping us
climb higher to achieve our spiritual goals. The winding stairs in Solomon's
temple in 1 Kings 6:8 symbolize our gradual spiritual growth—moving from one
level of maturity to the next. Our focus should be on God's Word, not on
ourselves or how quickly we can climb. It’s not about confidence or manoeuvres;
it’s about how we traverse the stairs that lead us to Christ, the path to
heaven, which deepens our connection with God and our spiritual maturity.
No matter where you find
yourself or what you’re doing, the stairways to Christ symbolize your faith and
growth. Are you on that path? Are you taking the right steps to reach those
stairways? When we look at Ezekiel's vision in chapter 40: 6, we see a future
temple representing progress and entry into sacred spaces. Yes, the stairs
Jesus provides take us into those sacred places—a true connection to God. Whatever
we undertake, it’s vital to evaluate the stairs, the stairway, and the ladder
of Christ and keep moving toward our goals. Those stairways are the entrance to
God's presence. Step onto them with confidence; don’t let anything hold you
back.
