STRENGTHEN YOURSELF AGAINST THE ENEMY!
2 Chronicles 17:1-5 TLB
Then his son Jehoshaphat
became the king and mobilized for war against Israel. [2] He placed garrisons
in all of the fortified cities of Judah, in various other places throughout the
country, and in the cities of Ephraim that his father had conquered. [3] The
Lord was with Jehoshaphat because he followed in the good footsteps of his
father's early years and did not worship idols. [4] He obeyed the commandments
of his father's God-quite unlike the people across the border in the land of
Israel. [5] So the Lord strengthened his position as king of Judah. All the
people of Judah cooperated by paying their taxes, so he became very wealthy as
well as being very popular.
Many Christians unknowingly
leave themselves vulnerable to spiritual attacks. They become like open
highways for the enemy—unguarded, exposed, and unaware of the need to shut,
lock, and bar every spiritual door. While we go to great lengths to secure our
homes and digital devices, we often neglect the spiritual fortification of our
lives, gifts, and destinies.
Jehoshaphat, king of Judah,
understood the importance of spiritual and military preparedness. He fortified
his kingdom not only with physical defences but also by seeking the Lord and
walking in His commandments. His example teaches us that spiritual strength is
essential to withstand the enemy’s schemes.
God commands us to live
righteously and teach others to do the same. This fosters a dependence on Him,
which is the only way to gain the strength needed to resist the enemy. When we
rely on ourselves or others for spiritual strength, we fall short. In 2 Chronicles
20:15, the Lord reminds Jehoshaphat—and us—that “the battle is not yours, but
God’s.”
Ephesians 6:12 makes it
clear: “We wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities,
powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual wickedness in high places.” These are
enemies that cannot be defeated by human strength alone. We need the supernatural
power of God.
Proverbs 4:23 instructs us
to “guard your heart with all diligence, for out of it flow the issues of
life.” This guarding is not passive—it requires active strengthening of our
mind, heart, body, and spirit. We must be vigilant against mental and emotional
attacks that seek to weaken our resolve and distract us from God’s purpose.
In Deuteronomy 12:3, the
Israelites were commanded to destroy all pagan worship centres upon entering
Canaan. These shrines represented spiritual compromise and idolatry. Removing
them was a physical act of spiritual obedience—a way to strengthen themselves
against the temptation to follow false gods.
Likewise, we must remove
anything in our lives that opens the door to spiritual compromise. This could
be habits, relationships, media, or environments that weaken our spiritual
defences.
Ephesians 6:10 exhorts us to
“be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might.” This strength is not
self-generated—it comes from abiding in God’s Word and presence. Psalm 119:105
says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” The Word of God
illuminates our way and equips us for victory.
Jehoshaphat didn’t just walk
uprightly; he also paused to seek God’s direction. Psalm 35:1 reminds us that
God will contend with those who contend with us. Psalm 60:12 declares, “Through
God we shall do valiantly, for He it is that shall tread down our enemies.”
Ezekiel 33:7 reveals our
role as spiritual watchmen. A watchman’s duty is to remain alert, sound the
alarm, and warn others of impending danger. God has appointed us to watch over
our families, communities, and nations. The responsibility is great, but so is
the grace He provides.
When the watchman sounds the
alarm, it is up to the people to respond. Will they prepare and strengthen
themselves, or ignore the warning and suffer the consequences?
The enemy is relentless and
increasingly subtle in his attacks. We must not be passive or complacent.
Strengthen yourself in the Lord. Fortify your spirit. Guard your heart. Remove
compromise. Stand firm in the Word. Be vigilant as a watchman. And above all,
remember—the battle belongs to the Lord.
