WALKING IN THE LIGHT!

1 John 1:5 AMPC

And this is the message [the message of promise] which we have heard from Him and now are reporting to you: God is Light, and there is no darkness in Him at all [no, not in any way].

Walking in the light of God is both a call to spiritual awakening and a journey from darkness to divine purpose.

Light is a divine symbol of clarity, truth, and life. Scripture declares, “God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all”. Just as physical sight allows us to appreciate the beauty of creation, spiritual sight enables us to discern truth, walk in wisdom, and live purposefully. Jesus came to bring light to those in darkness, fulfilling the prophecy in Isaiah 9:2: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light”, echoed in Matthew 4:16.

The nature of divine light is that it’s more than illumination—it is revelation. In Scripture, light represents purity, truth, and the presence of God. To walk in the light is to walk in alignment with God’s nature, free from the confusion and bondage of sin. Jesus declared Himself as the Light of the world in John 8:12, offering clarity to those lost in spiritual darkness.

Darkness is not merely the absence of light—it is the presence of deception, rebellion, and separation from God. Ephesians 5:8 reminds us: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light.” This transformation is not just behavioural—it is spiritual rebirth. From spiritual blindness to spiritual awakening and divine purpose.

Spiritual blindness in the Bible refers to a condition where a person cannot perceive, understand, or accept the truth of God, Jesus Christ, and His teachings due to unbelief, pride, or being deceived by Satan.

The Prodigal Son’s awakening in Luke 15:11–32 paints a vivid picture of spiritual blindness and restoration. The younger son seeking independence, asked for his inheritance and departure from his father mirrors humanity’s drift from divine truth. His descent into poverty and shame—feeding pigs and longing for their food—symbolizes the spiritual death that comes from separation from God. As Jesus said, “Apart from Me you can do nothing” in John 15:5. Like a flower uprooted from soil, life disconnected from God may appear vibrant briefly but ultimately withers. His eventual return—triggered by a moment of clarity (“he came to himself”)—is a powerful metaphor for repentance and renewal. The father’s embrace symbolizes God’s readiness to restore those who return to Him.

Darkness in Scripture often represents confusion, sin, and separation from God as seen with the young son. Ephesians 5:8 reminds us, “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” The prodigal son’s awakening— “he came to himself” in Luke 15:17—is a moment of spiritual clarity. He realized that even his father’s servants lived better than he did and chose to return home. This mirrors the call in James 4:8: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”

Have we walked so far from God that His light is now only a flicker in our lives?

The father’s response—running to embrace his son, clothing him with a robe, ring, and sandals—reflects God’s grace and readiness to restore. “For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found” according to Luke 15:24. Restoration begins when we return to the light. Psalm 119:105 says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” God’s Word illuminates our way back to Him. The Word of God is our compass in a world clouded by confusion. Restoration begins with a decision—to turn from darkness and walk toward the light.

Are you walking in the light, or merely surviving in the shadows? The light of God is not distant—it is available, transformative, and eternal. Let today be your moment of awakening. Step into the light and let your life reflect the glory of the One who called you out of darkness.
