WATCH YOUR MOUTH!
Proverbs 31:26 CSB
Her mouth speaks wisdom, and
loving instruction is on her tongue.
Have you noticed how easily
we open our mouths and let anything come out—often without thinking? We rarely
consider the impact of our words: the hurt they may cause, the confusion they
may create, or the damage they may do.
But the Bible encourages us
to speak wisely. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that gentle words can turn away
anger. Speaking with kindness, compassion, and wisdom can change situations,
bring peace, and solve problems.
In contrast, careless speech
creates problems. Ephesians 4:29 warns us against using foul language. This
includes swearing, negative talk, derogatory remarks, or anything that fails to
reflect the love of God or uplift others.
Our speech reveals what’s in
our hearts. The Bible in Luke 4:6 says, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the
mouth speaks.” So whatever is stored in your heart will eventually come out
through your words. That’s why we must be intentional and cautious with our
speech.
Proverbs 21:23 cautions us
to guard our mouths. James 1:26 goes further, saying that failure to control
our tongues renders our faith meaningless. People often hear us before they see
us. What impression does your speech give? What atmosphere does it create?
Colossians 4:6 says our
speech should be gracious and attractive seasoned with salt. Salt adds flavour.
As believers, our words should add flavour to others’ lives by building faith,
encouraging hearts, and lifting spirits.
Sadly, in today’s world, we
rarely commend others. I recall telling a man he looked handsome in his outfit,
and the colour suited him. The women around me reacted with shock, as if I had
committed a crime. His wife noticed and was grateful (as there had been a sad
news that morning) it was simply a kind gesture to put a smile on someone’s
face.
A compliment like “Your
perfume smells nice,” or “That lipstick suits you,” or “Those are beautiful
shoes,” can uplift someone. People are going through hidden pain masked by
smiles, chatter, or even excessive coffee drinking. Let’s be compassionate. Let’s
be careful with our words. They matter!
Proverbs 18:21 tells us that
the power of life and death is in the tongue. Careless words can destroy;
careful words can heal and give life. Let’s speak what God’s Word says about
every situation.
We must become like
parrots—repeating what we hear, but our parroting must be the Word of God: His
blessings, grace, mercy, and love. Let our speech reflect the Father’s heart.
Our text says, to speak with
wisdom—not foolishness. Speak with kindness, discernment, and love. Don’t speak
out of offense or bitterness. Don’t speak to hurt others.
Remember who you are—a child
of God. You don’t have the liberty to speak carelessly. Ask yourself: What is
my speech doing to the hearers? Is it uplifting or damaging?
We all desire to hear words
like “Well done,” “Bless you,” or “You look beautiful.” Constructive criticism
is helpful, but destructive words are soul-crushing. Gossip, condemnation,
humiliation—these are not the ways of Jesus. He calls us to love others as we
love ourselves.
If you love yourself, you
won’t speak harm to yourself—so why do it to others? If you don’t know what to
say, remember this: Shh… be quiet. Silence is golden.
Rather than say something
that will never be forgotten for the wrong reasons, choose silence. Let your
words be edifying, gracious, loving, and uplifting.
Guard your mouth. Guard your
tongue. The same mouth you use to praise God must not be used to speak filth.
Let the Word of God guide your speech and help you grow in wisdom.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
-
How can I become more intentional about
speaking life and not death?
-
What does it mean to “repeat what the Father
has said” in my conversations?
-
What kinds of words do I most often speak—are
they uplifting or discouraging?
-
Have I ever unknowingly hurt someone with my
words? How can I make it right?
PRAYER: Father, help me to
guard my mouth and my speech. Let my words be flavourful and uplifting to those
who hear them. May I never speak words that bring harm or death but always be
mindful to speak life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
