BLASPHEMY!
Luke 12:10 MSG “If you bad-mouth the Son of Man out of misunderstanding or ignorance, that can be overlooked. But if you’re knowingly attacking God himself, taking aim at the Holy Spirit, that won’t be overlooked.
Blasphemy is when one fails
to give God the honour He deserves. To blaspheme is to speak with contempt
about God or to be irreverent. It is the reproach of God’s name, character,
work, or attributes.
If anyone claims to be God
or acts as if they have displaced or replaced God as seen in Ezekiel 28:2, they
have placed themselves under God’s judgment. Such boasting is blasphemy, and eventually
God will bring it to account.
There are so many
blasphemous people today, including professing Christians. Especially
influential ministers, who have reduced God to a performer and His word a magic
or enchantment code. Blaspheming is claiming to be God and applying his
characteristics to yourself.
Exodus 20:7 says “You must
not misuse the name of the Lord your God. Blasphemy, therefore, overthrows this
commandment. The Lord will not let you go unpunished if you misuse his name.
Misusing God’s holy name is
a form of blasphemy. While this commandment is explained as a warning against
using God’s name and titles lightly or disrespectfully, it also refers to the
arrogance of those who identify as God’s people but behave however they please.
God’s name and character ought to be a continual source of awe for us.
God takes blasphemy
seriously judging by the harsh punishment meted out in Leviticus 24:10–16, the
man who blasphemed God’s name was stoned to death.
Jesus was accused of
blasphemy by the religious leaders of his day after claiming to be God himself.
They believed it was irreverent to claim that the all-powerful God had stooped
to take on human form. Ironically, not only was that exactly what God had done,
but the religious leaders’ ignorant condemnation of Jesus was itself blasphemy.
Cursing God is blasphemy,
even when we are responding to unfair or harsh circumstances. Job heard the
foolish counsel of his distraught wife and responded wisely in Job 2:8-10.
These days, religious
leaders, ministers, and Christians alike are making themselves equal with God
and using the scriptures for justification, mocking God’s sovereignty, and
advocating self-importance in delivering the “gospel.”
So many innocent people are
being led astray by so-called teachers, prophets, and pastors who claim that
their message is from God when if we look deeper into the word, we’ll see how
far removed those claims are.
Paul was a blasphemer as
seen in 1 Timothy 1:13 and tried to make others blaspheme, doing what he
thought was right and scripturally justified.
Anyone can blaspheme God, believers,
and unbelievers alike. Exhibiting contempt for what is sacred and important to
God is blasphemous.
Sennacherib contemptuously blasphemed
God by assuming Israel’s God was equal to the false gods of the surrounding
nations in Isaiah 36-37 while the king in Daniel 11:36 claimed to be or equal
to God. We blaspheme God whenever we claim His glory for ourselves.
We see a lot of national and
church leaders today putting themselves in place of God, claiming outright to
be God making themselves equal to Him.
While the average Christian
allows the circumstances and situations of life cause them to doubt the word of
God. The type of blasphemy seen in Mark 3:22-30, against the Holy Spirit. The
Pharisees were eyewitnesses to Jesus’ miracles, but they attributed the work of
the Holy Spirit to the presence of a demon as the reverse is the case today.
Where it’s become common for the enemy’s tools and resources to be used to look
like God’s work.
We must make sure not to
commit blasphemy as even Jesus admonishes in Luke 10:16 saying, “Anyone who
accepts your message is also accepting me. And anyone who rejects you is
rejecting me. And anyone who rejects me is rejecting God, who sent me.”

after reading Luke 12:10 and the explanation provided?

Are there ways in which I might have misused
God’s name or misrepresented His character in my words or actions?

In what practical ways can I honour God’s
name daily in my speech, decisions, and relationships?
PRAYER: Lord help me to be
careful in reflecting your holiness and to never misrepresent your glory,
authority, and character in any way that diminishes you name and sovereignty in
Jesus’ name. Amen.
