CHILD-FRIENDLY MEASURING STANDARD
2 Corinthians 10:12 GNT
Of course we would not dare
classify ourselves or compare ourselves with those who rate themselves so
highly. How stupid they are! They make up their own standards to measure
themselves by, and they judge themselves by their own standards!
Do you know what it means to
compare? It means looking at someone else and saying, “I want to be like them,”
or “I am better than them.” We do this every day—at school, at home, even in
church.
But God does not want us to
compare ourselves with others. His standard is the best, not ours or anyone
else’s. The Bible says in Psalm 40:5 that no one can be compared to the Lord!
When we compare, we often
feel sad or jealous. We forget the good things God has given us and only see
what others have. That’s why Theodore Roosevelt said, “Comparison is the thief
of joy.”
God made each of us special.
He wants you to be you, not someone else. In Romans 12:6, the Bible says
everyone has different gifts. Your gift is not the same as your friend’s
gift—and that’s okay!
Even in church, some people
compare pastors or singers. But 1 Corinthians 12 teaches that every gift comes
from God for a reason. So don’t compare your talents or blessings with others.
Instead, thank God for what He gave you and use it well.
Why is comparison bad?
It makes us proud or
jealous.
It steals our joy.
It stops us from loving and
helping others.
God wants us to live in unity,
not competition (John 17:23). So let’s stop comparing and start loving!
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
1. How does today’s verse change the way I see
myself and others?
2. When do I compare myself with others the
most?
3. How does comparing make me feel about God’s
blessings?
4. Am I looking at Jesus as my example, or other
people? (Galatians 6:4)
PRAYER: Lord, please take
away pride and jealousy from my heart. Help me to love others and live in
unity. Teach me to follow Jesus and not compare myself with anyone else. In
Jesus’ name, Amen.
Shalom!
