CHILD FRIENDLY TALISMAN

Jeremiah 7:1-7,9-10 GNT

The LORD sent me to the gate of the Temple where the people of Judah went in to worship. He told me to stand there and announce what the LORD Almighty, the God of Israel, had to say to them: "Change the way you are living and the things you are doing, and I will let you go on living here. [4] Stop believing those deceitful words, 'We are safe! This is the LORD's Temple, this is the LORD's Temple, this is the LORD's Temple!' [5] "Change the way you are living and stop doing the things you are doing. Be fair in your treatment of one another. [6] Stop taking advantage of aliens, orphans, and widows. Stop killing innocent people in this land. Stop worshiping other gods, for that will destroy you. [7] If you change, I will let you go on living here in the land which I gave your ancestors as a permanent possession. [9] You steal, murder, commit adultery, tell lies under oath, offer sacrifices to Baal, and worship gods that you had not known before. [10] You do these things I hate, and then you come and stand in my presence, in my own Temple, and say, 'We are safe!'

What Is a Talisman?

A talisman is an object that people believe can bring good luck or protect them from harm. Some people carry things like a rabbit’s foot, a lucky coin, or wear a “special” hat or necklace for luck. But the Bible says we should not trust objects for protection or blessings—only God can do that!

What Does the Bible Say?

·       Isaiah 3:18–20 shows that God does not like charms or amulets.

·       Deuteronomy 18:10–12 says magic and superstition are wrong.

·       Exodus 20:3 reminds us not to have any other gods or idols.

Even some Christians think wearing a cross or saying a prayer in a certain way will make God answer faster. But these things don’t have power—God does!

The People in Jeremiah’s Time

In our text, the people of Judah thought the Temple was like a big lucky charm. They believed that as long as the Temple was there, they were safe—even though they were doing wrong things like hurting others and worshipping idols. God told them this was wrong!

Why Talismans Are Wrong

·       They show we don’t trust God fully.

·       They can become idols.

·       They are connected to things like magic and witchcraft, which God hates.

There is no power in talismans—all power belongs to God!

Memory verse: Psalm 31:6 “I hate those who cling to worthless idols; as for me, I trust in the Lord.”

What Should We Do Instead?

·       Trust God, not objects.

·       Pray and obey His Word.

·       Thank Him for every blessing instead of saying “I’m lucky.”

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1.  Do I trust in God or in objects for protection?

2.  When something good happens, do I say “I’m lucky” or “Thank You, God”?

3.  How can I make sure my faith is in Jesus and not in superstition?

PRAYER: Lord, help me to trust You and not any object. Thank You that You are my protector and provider. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Shalom
