DECLUTTER THE SOUL!
Matthew 23:25-26 TLB
"Woe to you, Pharisees,
and you religious leaders-hypocrites! You are so careful to polish the outside
of the cup, but the inside is foul with extortion and greed. [26] Blind
Pharisees! First cleanse the inside of the cup, and then the whole cup will be
clean.
There comes a time when we
must declutter our homes, clearing away the mess that has quietly accumulated.
The same is true for our souls. God is not impressed by outward appearances; He
looks at the heart according to 1 Samuel 16:7. Many of us appear polished on
the outside—saying the right words, doing the right things—yet inside, our
hearts are cluttered with pride, bitterness, and hidden sin. Like so many
unbelieving believers today, who are clean outside, doing everything right,
saying the right things and looking and acting the right part and way but are
filthy inside. Like the religious leaders who were clean on the inside, while
seeking external purity, they were blind to the corrupt internal condition of
their hearts.
Jesus rebuked the religious
leaders for cleaning the outside of the cup while the inside remained filthy.
How often do we do the same? We smile in public, serve in church, and look
“holy,” but behind closed doors, our hearts are heavy with guilt, shame, and
unresolved issues. Psalm 101:2 says, “I will walk within my house with a
perfect heart.” That means living free from emotional baggage, procrastination,
and resistance to change—both in our homes and in our hearts.
The same can be said for
spiritual spring cleaning.
Only those who allow God to
clean their hearts through faith in Christ can become people who bring joy and
blessing into the lives of others as they exhibit God’s kingdom.
Just as spring cleaning
reaches the hidden corners of our homes, spiritual cleaning must reach the
hidden places of our hearts. Proverbs 20:9 asks, “Who can say, ‘I have made my
heart clean’?” The truth is that yesterday’s cleansing does not guarantee
today’s purity. Dirt accumulates, and so does sin. That’s why we must pray
daily, like David in Psalm 51:10: “Create in me a clean heart, O God.”
Some people put on an
appearance of having their lives altogether when they are around others out in
the world, at work, at church, and school, but at home, and in their hearts,
their lives are a mess. Or their houses are neat, but their hearts are full of
negativity.
When we allow God to cleanse
us through faith in Christ, we become vessels of His joy and blessing. Our
lives reflect His glory, and we carry His presence wherever we go.
We all struggle with moral
issues but act like everything is fine and instead of examining our hearts to
find out what areas need cleaning, we pretend that all is clean or just needs a
little dusting when what is required is deep spring cleaning.
When we spring clean our
homes, it’s usually the only time we get into the corners, under and behind
furniture, clear the cobwebs and throw things away, by the time the next spring
cleaning comes around, the filth would have mounted and accumulated again just
like our hearts and lives. Because you cleaned today doesn’t mean there’ll be
no dirt tomorrow, and because we repented today doesn’t mean we won’t need to
tomorrow.
