MEASURING STANDARD
2 Corinthians 10:12 (BBE)
For we will not make
comparison of ourselves with some of those who say good things about
themselves: but these, measuring themselves by themselves, and making
comparison of themselves with themselves, are not wise.
Measuring standard! Comparison!
To compare is the representation of one thing or person as similar to or like
another.
We compare in many areas of
our lives daily, measuring and pitting ourselves against others by our
standards.
God does not approve of
comparison, His standard is the ultimate, not yours, ours, theirs, or any other.
None can be compared to the Lord according to Psalm 40:5.
One of the biggest issues
and problems in humanity, even in the church is comparing ourselves with
others, our gifts, talents, achievement, and anything.
We dare to use our measuring
standard for ourselves, and as what the norm should be, but God deals with me
as me and you as you, not like anyone else. God won’t help us be anyone but
ourselves, the person He created us to be, not the one we want, or others want
and expects us to be.
God is not calling us to
compete with others but to love and help in unity, an integral part of our
Christian walk according to 1 Corinthians 1:10 and John 17:23.
How can we achieve this goal
if all we do is go compare! Comparison is not inspired by the Holy Spirit, but
by pride and self-conceit, believing we are superior to others. The Lord does
not like the proud according to Matthew 23:13.
Theodore Roosevelt said, “Comparison
is the thief of joy.” It’s because we fail to see God’s blessings and favour in
our lives but see who is doing, getting, and saying better things than us, we
look within ourselves for accomplishments and compare ourselves with each
other. We have no perfect standard and so can have no excellence in ourselves.
Comparison is a dangerous
game that we all play daily, and sadly, envy is usually the result of
comparison.
Prove your work according to
Galatians 6:4, let everyone examine themselves and their conduct by the example
of Jesus, and not in another, and not derive value from comparing with others
who may be weaker, or less instructed than ourselves.
The only rule for believers
is the word of God, and we must pattern our lives according to the examples of
Christ. Christ did not and does not compare with others, we must not compare
ourselves with others; they are not God’s measuring standard.
Measuring standard is everywhere,
parents compare their children with others, even pitting siblings against each
other. Can’t you see, be, act or speak like your brother or sister? See how Mrs
So’s child is doing, why can’t you be like them? But according to Romans 12:6,
each person is gifted differently, including our children.
We compare Pastors whose
calling are different from others, whose grace and anointing are more visible. I
would not have you ignorant says 1 Corinthians 12 says “I wish you fully to
know whence all such gifts come, and for what end they are given, that each
person may serve the Church in the capacity in which God has placed him, that
there may be no misunderstandings and division in the body. Every believer has
been given at least one spiritual gift, so ask the Holy Spirit to reveal it to
you.
Do not compare your gift,
talent, grace, and anointing with others. You can never be like anybody else, follow
God’s measuring standard!

PRAYER: Lord,
uproot pride and self-conceit from my heart. Teach me to walk in humility and
love. Help me to build unity in the body of Christ, not competition. Help me not
compare myself with others but use Christ as my standard, and His Word my
measure in Jesus’ name, amen.
