Luke 12:10 “If you bad-mouth the Son of Man because you no understand or you dey ignorant, e fit still be overlooked. But if you knowingly attack God Himself — if you take aim at the Holy Spirit — that one no go ever be overlooked.”

 

Blasphemy na when person no give God the honour wey He deserve. To blaspheme mean to talk anyhow or show disrespect towards God. E mean to talk bad of God name, character, work or Him attributes.

If anybody claim say na them be God or act like say them don replace am, like we see for Ezekiel 28:2, that person don put himself for God judgment. That kind boasting na blasphemy, and God go surely judge am.

Plenty people dey blaspheme God today — even some wey still call themselves Christians. Especially some popular ministers wey don turn God to performer and God word to magic code or enchantment. To blaspheme mean to claim you be God or to dey apply God characteristics to yourself.

Exodus 20:7 talk say, “You must not misuse the name of the Lord your God.” Blasphemy dey break this commandment. God no go let person go free wey dey misuse Him name.

To misuse God holy name na blasphemy. This commandment dey warn us make we no use God name play or dey talk am carelessly. E also talk against those wey say them be God people but them life no show am. God name and character suppose dey always make us tremble and respect am.

God dey take blasphemy serious. As we see for Leviticus 24:10–16, the man wey blaspheme God name that time, dem stone am to death.

Jesus too dem accuse am of blasphemy because He claim say He be God. The religious leaders believe say e no make sense say God go turn human being. But na exactly wetin God do. Ironically, their foolish condemnation of Jesus na the true blasphemy.

To curse God also na blasphemy — even when life hard or unfair. Job wife advise am make e curse God die, but he reply her with wisdom for Job 2:8–10.

Today, we still see many religious leaders, ministers and Christians wey dey act like say them don equal to God. Them dey use scripture twist anyhow, mock God power and preach self-importance instead of Christ.

Plenty innocent people dey fall for these fake pastors and prophets wey claim say God send them, but if you check well for word of God, you go see say e far from truth.

Paul self talk say before he repent, he be blasphemer for 1 Timothy 1:13. He even try make others commit blasphemy because he think say he dey do God work.

Anybody fit blaspheme God — believer or unbeliever. Anytime we dey show contempt or disrespect for wetin holy or sacred to God, we dey commit blasphemy.

Sennacherib blaspheme God when he talk say Israel God na the same with idols of other nations as Isaiah 36–37 talk. The king for Daniel 11:36 also claim say he be God or equal to God. Anytime we dey take God glory for ourselves, we don blaspheme.

We dey see many national and church leaders today wey dey call themselves “god” or acting like say them don reach the same level with God.

Even ordinary Christians dey sometimes blaspheme when life wahala make them doubt God word. The type of blasphemy we see for Mark 3:22–30 — that one na against the Holy Spirit. The Pharisees witness Jesus miracles but them talk say na demon work; that one na pure blasphemy. Today na opposite we dey see — evil things dey look like say na God handwork.

Make we dey careful make we no commit blasphemy. Jesus don warn us for Luke 10:16, say “Anybody wey accept your message accept me. Anybody wey reject you, reject me. And anybody wey reject me, reject God wey send me.”

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

- How you go define blasphemy personally after reading Luke 12:10 and the explanation above? 

- You don ever use God name carelessly or misrepresent Him character with your words or actions? 

- You don ever follow teachings or practice wey turn God word to “magic code” instead of living truth? 

- Which practical way you fit honour God name every day — for your talk, decisions and relationships?
