PIDGIN MEASURING STANDARD

2 Korintians 10:12'Wi nor go kompare awasef with doz wey sey dem good well-well or kon put awasef for di same group. But wen dem dey measure and kompare demsef with demsef, e dey show sey dem nor get sense. '

Measuring standard! Comparison! To compare na when person take one thing or person hold another one side-by-side, dey say dem be like each other.

Every day we dey compare for many area of life, dey measure ourselves and match ourselves against others by our own standard.

But God no approve this kain comparison life; na Him own standard be the final one—no be your own, our own, their own, or anybody own.

Nobody fit stand side-by-side with the Lord as Psalm 40:5 show; no person or thing reach am.

One of the biggest problem wey dey worry human beings—even inside church—na this habit of to dey compare ourselves with others: our gift, talent, achievement and everything.

We dey even use ourselves take measure ourselves, as if we be the norm; but God dey deal with me as me and you as you, not as copy of another person.

God no call us make we turn to another person; Him no go help us become who we or people want make we be, but who Him create us to be.

He no call us to compete; Him call us to love and to help each other in unity, as part of our Christian walk, according to 1 Corinthians 1:10 and John 17:23.

How we go fit reach that kind unity if everything we dey do na “go compare, go compare” with other measuring standard?

Comparison no dey come from Holy Spirit; e dey come from pride and self-conceit, feeling say we better pass other people. The Lord no like proud heart as Matthew 23:12 show (God dey humble who raise himself).

Theodore Roosevelt talk say “Comparison na thief of joy.”  Because when we dey compare, we no dey see God blessing and favour for our own life again; we just dey look who dey do, get or talk better than we. We dey look inward for achievement and dey match ourselves with each other. Since we no be perfect standard, we no fit produce true excellence by ourselves.

Comparison na dangerous game wey most of us dey play every day, and many times, envy na the result.

Galatians 6:4 tell us make each person “prove” or examine him own work; make we check our life and conduct by example of Jesus, no be by another person, and no take value from comparing with those wey fit dey weaker or less instructed than we.

The only correct rule for believer na the word of God.

We must shape our life after Christ example. Christ no measure Himself with anybody; so we too no suppose dey measure ourselves with people—dem no be God standard.

Measurement standard full everywhere: parents dey compare their children with others, even dey push siblings against each other—“You no dey see how your brother/sister be? Why you no fit be like them? See how Mrs So-so pikin dey do, why you no fit be like that?”

But Romans 12:6 show say God give everybody different gifts—including our children—so comparison no fair and no wise.

We even dey compare Pastors, as if calling, grace and anointing be the same. Some calling dey more “visible” than others, but it no mean say God love one pass another.

1 Corinthians 12 explain say make we understand where these gifts come from and why God give them: so each person go serve the Church for the place and capacity wey God put am, make we no come get confusion and division for body of Christ.

Every believer get at least one spiritual gift, so instead of comparison, make you ask Holy Spirit make Him show you your own gift.

No compare your gift, measure your talent, grace or anointing with anybody own. You no go ever fit become another person; follow God measuring standard!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

- How this scripture take challenge the way I take see myself and other people?

- For which area of my life I dey compare myself with others pass?

- How comparison dey affect my joy and my gratitude to God?

- I dey really examine myself according to Galatians 6:4—by Christ example—abi I still dey use people as my measure?

PRAYER: Lord, commot pride and self-conceit from my heart. Teach me to waka in humility and love. Help me build unity for body of Christ, no be competition. Make I no dey compare myself with others, but use Christ as my only standard and Him Word as my measure, in Jesus’ name, amen.
