PIDGIN THE MERCY SEAT!

Exodus 25:17-22

“Make yu make one kover with pure gold; e go long rish three fit nine inches kon wide rish two fit three inches. 18Yu go use gold wey dem melt take make two tins wey bi like angel wey get plenty feada kon put dem for di two korna for di box kover. 19One among di angels wey dem make, go dey one end and di sekond one go dey di oda end. 20Di angels go spread dia feada kon kover di box and di angels go face each oda dey look di box. 21Yu go put di box kover on-top di box, den kon put di flat stones wey I go give yu, inside. 22Den I go meet yu for der and from di box kover; between di two angels wey kover di box wey di kommandment dey, I go tell yu all di tins wey yu go kommand Israel pipol. 

 

Mercy na one of the main character and nature of the Lord. 

The ark of the covenant get the mercy seat join am. Orthodox Churches like Catholic Church get something dem dey call confessional; na small cubicle with partition wey dey give privacy, where the priest go sit down for one side for wingback chair and the person wey wan confess go sit or kneel down for cushion for the other side. The idea be say the priest go hear the confession, then e go talk forgiveness and declare say dem don free from their sins according to John 20:23 wey talk say whoever we forgive, God go forgive am too, but na only Jesus really fit wipe sin comot, no be priest. 

Forgiveness dey before confession and repentance, so God prepare Him own “confessional” place for Him children too. 

The Mercy Seat join with the ceremony for Day of Atonement, na there God dey appear, and na only once a year the high priest fit enter the Holy of Holies to burn incense and sprinkle the blood of sacrifice to make atonement for him own and the people sin. 

The meaning of the mercy seat clear well-well for New Testament when Jesus come die as the sacrifice. 

Dem build the mercy seat on top the Ark of the covenant of God. 

The focus for the construction of the ark for Exodus 25 and the golden “seat” or “cover” na to symbolize the throne of God, na earthly picture of heavenly reality, wey dem put for the most holy place for God kingdom for earth, the Holy of Holies or inner sanctum wey be the centre of Israel tabernacle and temple. 

The cover of the Ark (mercy seat) stand for God throne and the Ark itself na like Him footstool. This symbol show say God be King and the Holy of Holies na like the place of divine government. 

“I go meet una der,” na so the Lord talk for verse 22, “and I go talk with una from above the mercy seat.” The Shekinah glory of God, the sign of Him presence, rest for the mercy seat, and dem show am by the cloud; from inside that place God dey give clear answer when priests ask Him question on behalf of the people. 

God dey ready and willing to meet with you—question be, you ready so? 

If the Creator of the universe fit arrange special meeting place and time just for you, you no suppose decide and try make you meet am too? 

God talk through Moses about compassion and mercy, and Paul quote am for Romans 9:15. Today, our mercy seat dey inside and through Christ Jesus, as John 6:44 show say nobody fit come to the Father except the Father draw am through Jesus. 

God mercy show clearly through the atoning work of Calvary for everybody wey trust Jesus. Since all of us be sinners as Romans 3:23-24 talk, God come justify us by Him grace as free gift through the redemption wey dey in Christ Jesus. 

The Mercy Seat no get value because e be pure gold, but because na there dem dey sprinkle the blood of sacrifice for God presence. The word “mercy seat” and “atonement” come from the same root; e mean to cover, cancel, appease or cleanse. God dey wait make you come meet am for the Mercy Seat so that e go cover you, cancel the plans of your enemies and cleanse you from the dirt of life. Na there He go give you answers, direction and revelation for all your tomorrow. 

The mercy seat connect directly to Jesus because the Old Testament symbol fulfil for Him sacrificial death. For the tabernacle, the mercy seat na the place wey dem dey sprinkle the blood of atonement to show say God and Him people don reconcile. For New Testament, Jesus be the real Mercy Seat—through Him death for Calvary, He provide full atonement for sin, show God mercy, and give believers direct access to God presence. Na why John 6:44 fit talk say our meeting point with God now na in and through Jesus.
