PIDGIN PASS DOWN THE PROMISE, NO BE THE WILDERNESS!
Deuteronomi 4:9–10
But make una look well! Make
una dey kareful, so dat una nor go forget wetin una don take una eyes si. As
long as una dey life, make una nor let dis tins komot from una mind! Make una
make sure sey una tell una shidren and grand-shidren about dis tins. 10Make una
nor forget di day wey una stand before di Oga una God for Mount Horeb where E
for tell mi sey, “Gada all di pipol kom meet mi, so dat I go tell dem my
kommand. Den dem go learn to dey fear mi as long as dem dey alive and dem go
tish dia shidren to dey fear mi too.”
Plenty things dey wey people
dey pass from one generation go another — things like family ways, customs and
even bad habits. But the same way, God dey instruct us make we pass go our
children and future generation the stories, promises, and instructions wey dey
for Bible.
The phrase “Pass down the
promise, no be the wilderness” na one modern way to talk say God want make one
generation hand over faith in Him promises, no be unbelief, grumbling and
disobedience wey keep Israel for wilderness.
For the story of Exodus, God
carry Israel come out from Egypt to give them the Promised Land — the land of
rest, inheritance, and blessing as covenant for them and their children (Exodus
3:7–8, Deuteronomy 6:10–12). The “wilderness” no be their final home; na just
training ground where dem go learn to trust God presence and daily
provision.
When person go through
training, e learn plenty lessons wey e suppose pass give others — na the same
thing for Christian life. Every lesson wey Israel learn from wilderness suppose
be memorial stone.
Memorial stones for Bible
mean reminder of God faithfulness and miracle works. For Joshua 4:1–9, after
Israel cross River Jordan enter Promised Land, God tell Joshua make twelve men
(one from each tribe) carry stones from the riverbed where priests with the Ark
of Covenant stand. Dem arrange those stones for Gilgal as memorial to remind
future generations of God faithfulness.
See am well — those stones
na reminder of God faithfulness (the promises) and no be their disobedience
(the wilderness). God no want make we dey pass down wrong doctrines, failures,
or rebellion.
But because the Israelites
doubt God, complain and rebel, that generation die for wilderness — dem no
enter the Promised Land. Na only their children enter go receive the promise
(Numbers 14:26–35, Hebrews 3:7–19). Meaning say unbelief and disobedience na
wetin dem pass down, and e cost them the fullness of God promise.
Wetin we suppose pass down?
All through Deuteronomy,
Moses dey beg Israel make dem teach God word diligently to their children so
dem go fear the Lord, remember Him great works and live long for the land wey
He swear give them. That same instruction still concern us wey be children of
God today.
We suppose pass down
covenant loyalty, obedience and trust in God faithfulness — no be stubbornness
and complain like Israel generation for wilderness.
For New Testament, believers
too dey told make dem pass down sincere faith, sound doctrine and life filled
with the Spirit, no be the wilderness of sin and hardness of heart (2 Timothy
1:5, 2:1–2, Hebrews 3:12–15). Instead of passing down fear, bitterness or
half–hearted Christianity, we suppose pass down the gospel promise in Christ —
wey bring us true rest and spiritual inheritance.
To “pass down the promise,
no be the wilderness” mean say we go:
- Dey share testimonies of
God faithfulness pass to dey rehearse our disappointments and complaints.
- Teach Scripture and gospel
clearly make the next generation know God character and His covenant promises
through Christ.
- Refuse to make unbelief,
compromise, and grumbling normal for house or church, but instead show
repentance, trust and obedience by example.
So even though the slogan no
come directly from Bible verse, e capture strong message from the 40 years of
Israel wandering and the call make we raise children and disciples wey go
inherit faith and promise — no be wilderness of unbelief.
You dey pass down the
promise or the wilderness?
