PIDGIN SHED THOSE WEIGHTS

Make wi dey look Jesus Christ wey give us awa faith and go help us keep am. Bikos of di joy wey Jesus dey espect, e sofa for cross and nor mind di shame wey follow am. But naw, e don sidan for di rite hand side for God throne.”

 

 

Weight! Bulk! Mass! No be everybody dey struggle with am? Sometimes we wan add small, sometimes we wan lose am. For some people, na up–down matter. To lose and gain weight don turn big issue wey even don become billion-dollar business for the whole world. People ready to do anything just to lose weight for different reasons. Unnecessary weight no good for body and suppose comot for health sake, but to dey do all kinds of extreme things just to look “socially, acceptably thin” no right and e no please God. 

Bible no really talk directly about weight loss, but e give us principles on how to live godly life, take care of our body and stay healthy. Bible teach us for 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 say make we glorify God with our body and make we avoid gluttony and idolatry as Proverbs 23:2 and Colossians 3:5 talk. So, if we dey lose weight or dey exercise, make e be unto the Lord, no be just to impress people, and make we ask Holy Spirit to help us overcome any sinful habit. 

Our text tell us make we shed, strip or lay aside every weight wey dey tie us down, but this one dey talk more about spiritual weight, no be only physical fat for body. We fit shed different kinds of weight—anything wey dey weigh us down and dey stop us from doing our best and fulfilling our purpose. This weight fit be mental, emotional, psychological, spiritual and even physical. To shed weight dey involve work. Person no fit lose physical weight if e no dey exercise; na so e be for spiritual weight too—no spiritual exercise, no spiritual weight loss. 

Which spiritual weight you dey drag up and down wey suppose don comot since? We suppose throw way every weight of sin wey fit choke, restrict and limit us, just like athlete wey dey prepare for race go control him diet to win prize. Carnal and worldly lusts, and anything—from outside or inside—weh go slow down the heavenly runner, na the spiritual weight we must lay aside. All the extra load—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes and the pride of life—and even some things wey on their own dey harmless or useful, but for your own case dey slow you down, must go. Like for Mark 10:50, the blind man throw way him garment to run go meet Jesus. 

People dey lose weight for different reasons. Bride go shed weight make the wedding gown fit perfectly for that special day. New mama go work hard to lose pregnancy weight to keep healthy shape. Some people just wan lose weight wey don gather over the years because of too much indulgence. 

As e be for physical, na so e be for spiritual. We dey gather unnecessary spiritual weight from life challenges and from doing wrong things. As bad physical habits dey stick and cause plenty health wahala, na so bad spiritual habits dey stick and create heavy baggage wey go too much for us to carry and go stop us from fulfilling the purpose wey God give us. 

This scripture dey tell us make we lay down anything wey dey hinder our Christian walk and progress—anything addictive wey dey weaken or slow us down. Weights like arrogance, conceit, pride, lust, greed and others wey 1 John 2:16 mention. 

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 talk say: “You no know say your body na Holy Ghost temple, wey you get from God, and you no belong to yourself? We dey glorify the Lord for our body when we take care of the total man—spirit, soul and body—by shedding everything wey no suppose dey there. 

To shed and continue to dey shed weight, we must remember wetin Proverbs 13:25 talk: “The righteous dey chop to satisfy him soul, but the wicked belle go still dey hungry.” So make we try dey feed on things wey go nourish our soul and no go put extra, unnecessary weight on us.

- Which “weights” for your life—mental, emotional, spiritual or physical—dey slow down your walk with God? 

- You get habits or attitudes (like pride, greed, lust) wey you need to lay aside to fit run your race well? 

- Which spiritual exercise (prayer, fasting, Bible study) fit help you shed spiritual weight? 

- Which one step you fit take today to start to shed unnecessary spiritual weight? 

PRAYER: Lord, help me to keep to my ideal weight for my total man, so that nothing go hold me back from following and serving You well, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
