PIDGIN TRAINED COWARDS!
1 Samuel 17:19-47
Dem dey with Saul and Israel
men wey won fight Filistia pipol for Ela Valley.”
20So David get up before day
break kon give en papa animal to pesin make e guide dem. Afta e don pak
evritin, e kon go just as Jesse tell am. E rish di kamp as di sojas dey go di
war front and dem dey sing war song. 21Israel pipol and Filistia pipol stand
opposite each oda and dem dey ready to fight. 22Afta David don give wetin e
karry kom to di pesin wey dey divide tins give di sojas, e kon run go di war
front. Wen e rish der, e kon ask en brodas, how una dey? 23As e dey tok to dem,
Goliat di Filistia champion wey kom from Gat kon kom out from Filistia pipol
side. E tok as e always dey do and David kon hear am. 24Wen Israel men si
Goliat, dem go hide, bikos of fear.
25Di men for Israel kon sey,
“Yu si dis man wey dey kom out always? E dey do like dis to shalenge all
Israel. But awa king don sey, ‘Anybody wey go fit kill di man, e go gi-am money
and en dota make e marry and di pesin papa house nor go dey pay tax again.’ ”
26David ask di men wey stand
near am, “Na wetin dem go do for di man wey go kill dis Filistia man kon free
Israel from shame? Bikos who bi dis Filistia man wey nor sekonsaiz, wey dey
shalenge God wey dey alive, sojas?”
27Di sojas kon tell am wetin
di king promise, “Dis na wetin I go do for di man wey go kill Goliat.”
28Wen en senior broda Eliab
hear am dey tok to di men, e kon vex tell David, “Wetin make yu kom der? Na who
yu sey make e guide doz sheep for di desert? I know sey yu like to show yorsef!
Yu just kom here to wosh di fight!”
29David ansa am, “Wetin I
don do naw? I nor go fit tok anytin again?” 30Den, David waka komot der kon go
ask anoda pesin di same kweshon, but dem gi-am di same ansa. 31Wen dem hear
wetin David tok, dem kon tell Saul. So Saul kon koll David.
32David tell Saul, “Nor let
anybody mind fail am. Yor savant go-go fight dis Filistia man!” 33But Saul ansa
David, “Yu nor go fit fight dis Filistia man, bikos e don tey wen dis man don
dey fight and yu still small!”
34David ansa Saul, “Yor
savant dey guide animal for en papa. Wen ever lion or bear or wild animals kon
karry one sheep from di odas, 35I go porshu di animal, nak am fall kon save di
sheep from en mout. If e stand up won fight, I go hold en neck, nak and kill-am.
36Yor savant don kill both lion and bear. Dis Filistia man wey dem nor
sekonsaiz go bi like one of dem. Bikos e don shalenge God wey dey alive sojas!”
37David still sey, “God wey diliver mi from di lion and di bear, go still
diliver mi from dis Filistia man hand!”
Den Saul kon tell David,
“Make yu go fight am and make God dey with yu.”
38Den Saul wear wetin e take
dey fight put for David body kon put en bronze helmet for en head. E still put
iron shirt for en body. 39David put en swod for di tins wey e wear to go fight
and e kon try to waka, but e nor fit waka, bikos e nor dey use dem before.
David kon tell Saul, “I nor
fit waka with dis tins, bikos I neva use dem before.” So David kon remove dem.
40David karry en stik for en hand kon pick five good stone from di stream, den
e put dem for en animal bag. E take en katapault kon dey go meet di Filistia
man.
41Di Filistia man with di
pesin wey karry en swod kon dey waka kom meet David. 42Wen di Filistia man near
David, e kon vex well-well, bikos na small and fine boy e bi. 43Di Filistia man
tell David, “I bi dog wey yu dey kom meet with stik?” Di Filistia man kon use
en juju name take curse David. 44E tell am, “Kom meet mi, so dat I go give yor
flesh to di birds for sky and wild animals for di field, make dem chop.”
45But David ansa am, “Yu dey
kom meet mi with swod, spear and javelin. But I dey kom meet yu with di name of
di Oga wey bi God of all ogas; Israel sojas God wey yu dey shalenge. 46Today,
God go give yu to mi. I go kill yu for groun kon kut yor head komot. I go give
yor dead body to di bird for di sky and di wild animals for di land. Den all di
land go know sey Israel pipol get betta God 47and evribody for here go know sey
nor bi by swod or spear, God dey take save pesin. Bikos na God get di fight and
E go give yu to us.”
Trained cowards na people
wey sabi book, get position or don train well, but when e reach time to show
courage, dem freeze for fear.
David brothers na example!
Dem be soldier for Saul army, trained for war, but when Goliath challenge
Israel, dem tremble. Even with all their training, dem no get faith or
boldness. David, small shepherd boy, come step out with confidence for God.
Ask yourself: wetin you don
train for wey fear don make you freeze when God call you act?
Saul, the king wey get power
and experience, sef turn coward when e matter pass. Fear no let am face
Goliath. Him position and training no give am courage.
Na only trust and confidence
for the Lord fit bring real courage. God sabi say life go get plenti fearful
situations, that na why e tell us for Deuteronomy 31:6 say, “To dey strong! Dey
courageous! No fear them! For God dey with you. He no go fail you or forsake
you.”
True talk — Romans 8:31-33
remind us say, If God dey for our side, who fit be against us?
Nelson Mandela talk am well:
“Courage no be say fear no dey, but say you fit conquer am. The brave man no be
who no dey fear, but who fit overcome hin fear.”
True talk! Courage na
choice! Mandela words remind us say courage no mean you no dey fear, na to act
even when you dey fear. Real leaders dey focus on God bigness, not the size of
problem.
That means make we dey
always see the “big God” for every situation and allow courage rise, instead of
focusing on the “small devil” wey wan allow fear rule our heart.
The Israelite spies for Numbers
13–14 na another group of trained cowards. Twelve spies go check the Promised
Land. Ten come back with fear report wey discourage the whole nation—even
though dem see God power before! Their training as leaders no stop their
cowardice. Dem look the natural, the physical, forget the divine truth wey God
don talk.
Dem see giants instead of
promise! Make we Christians no dey allow fear make us decide wrongly, because
fear dey twist reality and dey kill faith.
Why e dey happen so?
Training dey build body and
mind, but courage dey come from faith and trust for God. Without spiritual
confidence, even best-trained person fit still fall.
Scripture show am clear:
- Fear dey make problem look
bigger than e be (Goliath look bigger than God to Saul army).
- Faith dey make God power
big (David see Goliath small beside God).
Faith na fuel for courage!
David understand this—him victory come from trust in God, not from war
training.
We need to focus our trust
for God, not our skills. Courage dey come from strong belief, not title or
experience.
Courage dey spiritual, no be
only physical. True bravery dey come from depending on God, not ourself.
Training without faith na
paralysis! Knowledge and skill no get meaning if fear don take over.
God dey always use
unexpected people. David, Gideon, and others prove say those wey trust God dey
always win, even if dem no be the most prepared. So make believers dey humble
and follow God’s strategy.
Training alone no go do!
Saul and him army don train well, but fear still cage dem. That means say skill
and position no equal courage. Leaders get build spiritual confidence, not just
competence.
Make you no be trained
coward o!
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- When you don face
something wey your training no stop fear from holding you?
- How you dey react when
challenge big pass your power?
- Which practical step you
fit take to “see the big God” for every wahala instead of seeing the “small
devil”?
- How you fit stay humble
and follow God plan instead of rely only on your own preparation?
PRAYER: Heavenly Father,
thank You for reminding me say courage no mean fear no dey, but say I fit
conquer am. I confess say sometimes fear dey paralyze me even with my training
and experience. Lord, help me make I put my eyes on You—the Big God—and not the
challenge. Strengthen my faith make I act boldly in obedience to Your Word. In
Jesus’ name, amen.
