CANCEL CULTURE!
CANCEL CULTURE
Colossians 2:13-15 TLB
You were dead in sins, and
your sinful desires were not yet cut away. Then he gave you a share in the very
life of Christ, for he forgave all your sins, [14] and blotted out the charges
proved against you, the list of his commandments which you had not obeyed. He
took this list of sins and destroyed it by nailing it to Christ's cross. [15]
In this way God took away Satan's power to accuse you of sin, and God openly
displayed to the whole world Christ's triumph at the cross where your sins were
all taken away.
Cancel culture has become
one of society’s most powerful tools, especially on social media. It is the
practice of withdrawing support from individuals or organizations because of
perceived offensive behaviour or opinions. When the masses, influencers, or
political groups dislike someone’s views, they often rally to silence, boycott,
or remove that person from platforms. Our societies are now operating under the
full steam of Isaiah 5:20 as Nations and influencers have and continue to
invert God’s standard of right and wrong by silencing, condemning, and
cancelling anyone whose views are contrary to theirs, especially biblical
views.
Cancel culture is the modern
social attitude that controversial speech or behaviour must be punished through
public shaming, silencing, boycotting, firing, bankrupting, de-platforming, and
many more. The result is that the offender’s influence, presence, and/or
reputation is “cancelled out.”
This trend reflects Isaiah
5:20, where good is called evil and evil good. Many have inverted God’s
standards, silencing and condemning anyone who stands for biblical truth.
Cancel culture punishes controversial speech or behaviour through public
shaming, firing, bankrupting, and de-platforming—effectively erasing a person’s
influence and reputation.
Sadly, this attitude has
extended beyond society into the church. Some clergy now align with worldly
systems to overturn God’s standards. Yet Scripture reminds us that God’s Word
will offend the sinful nature (John 6:61–62). People resist truth because they
want to live their own way, and when God’s Word confronts their desires, they
attempt to “cancel” Him and His standards.
But before cancel culture
existed, Christ cancelled the enemy’s power and made a public spectacle of him seen
in verse 15. Ironically, what was done to Jesus—mocking, silencing, and
rejection—is now what people do to one another. Criticism on social media is
not cancel culture unless it tries to cancel its subject. You are at risk of
cancellation, if your critics are calling for you to be de-platformed or fired
or put out of business because of your views, opinion, ideas, beliefs, even
thoughts and sadly, especially for your faith (Christian beliefs).
As Believers, we are to
pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, and gentleness
according to 1 Timothy 6:11 amid cancel culture and must use our words wisely.
Cancel culture seeks to
expose and hold those in the public eye accountable for wrongs that they have
done, both past and present, which is not a bad thing in a way if it’s left to
such things, unfortunately, we have imported that culture to try and cancel the
one thing and person that can make a difference in life and society. God! The
Bible tells Christians to seek justice and that we should judge both poor and
great alike. However, cancel culture has a reputation for being harsh and
merciless – something the Bible gives clear warnings against.
We must speak truth in love as
instructed in Ephesians 4:15 and resist joining the harsh, merciless bandwagon
that Scripture warns against. Christ cancelled every accusation against us and
disarmed the powers of darkness so we could live counter-culturally—being salt
and light says Matthew 5:13–16. If cancel culture targets you for your faith,
remember David’s words: “Consider how many are my foes, and with what violent
hatred they hate me” seen in Psalm 25:19. Stand firm, pray for God’s
protection, and keep sharing His Word.
