DIVINE SUPPLY!
2 Kings 4:1-7 TLB
One day the wife of one of
the seminary students came to Elisha to tell him of her husband's death. He was
a man who had loved God, she said. But he had owed some money when he died, and
now the creditor was demanding it back. If she didn't pay, he said he would
take her two sons as his slaves. [2] "What shall I do?" Elisha asked.
"How much food do you have in the house?" "Nothing at all,
except a jar of olive oil," she replied. [3] "Then borrow many pots
and pans from your friends and neighbors!" he instructed. [4] "Go
into your house with your sons and shut the door behind you. Then pour olive
oil from your jar into the pots and pans, setting them aside as they are
filled!" [5] So she did. Her sons brought the pots and pans to her, and
she filled one after another! [6] Soon every container was full to the brim!
"Bring me another jar," she said to her sons. "There aren't any
more!" they told her. And then the oil stopped flowing! [7] When she told
the prophet what had happened, he said to her, "Go and sell the oil and
pay your debt, and there will be enough money left for you and your sons to
live on!"
2 Chronicles 29:12 says wealth and riches
comes from the Lord. The world operates as though they were responsible for all
the things humanity enjoys and in their prideful superiority, they believe they
can police thigs their own way and stop the “extinction” or “rationing” of
certain things for it to last humanity.
The one who made all things
has not and will never take His fingers off the pulse of creation. That means
He alone can keep supplying whatever we need from His vast, undepletable
storehouse.
God can easily supply as
well as multiply whatever we need.
This miracle of God’s
multiplication was based on what was at hand to procure what was needed, in
this case, a jar of oil was the available asset. What is your asset? We weren’t
told of the size of the jar, but that was all this woman had and the creditor
was coming to take her sons for repayment.
This miracle of
multiplication parallels the jar of flour in 1 Kings 17:14-16, another miracle
based on “assets.” What is in your hand?
God’s question to Moses in Exodus 4:2 when Moses complained of his inadequacies
to work for God. Moses’s asset was his staff, it gave him an identity,
influence, and income.
What are “your assets?” what
has the Lord given you that is part of you? A jar of oil! Oil is a staple
commodity in every society and useful for different purposes: lighting,
heating, cooking, anointing, healing, and even cosmetics according to Psalm 104:15.
A jar of oil! Not much to
this woman but enough in God’s hands to turn her life around.
A jar of oil that gave her
an identity, influence, and income, from a debtor to an oil tycoon in a day.
The creditor, the devil is
always waiting to take us captive, not only until jubilee but for eternity.
Wise up to your assets and cry to the Lord to rescue you before the enemy gets
a hold of you.
This woman didn’t complain
of the injustice of her children being taken as payment for her late husband’s
debt and Elijah recognised like the woman, the legality of the law but was
quick to offer a solution that not only solved the immediate problem but bring
a lasting change to them. Notice how he
suggested she makes use of her asset and then gives his first piece of
practical advice: ‘Go outside, borrow vessels from all your neighbours, empty
vessels and not just a few. The answer to the widow’s problems wasn’t hers
alone; her neighbours had a role to play.
There are people around us who have roles to play in our advancement, we
must recognise them and make sure that whilst we like to be independent, we
don’t stop them from receiving the blessings due them from helping and blessing
us.
There is a blessing and
reward that awaits those who genuinely do things for us without expectations
and payment. God doesn’t just deal with the areas we prayed about but does a
complete work of fixing even those things we’re not aware we needed, according
to Ephesians 3:20. This widow’s debt was paid by the God she believed in, but
the miracle still needed the widow’s input to be activated, her obedience to
the prophet’s instructions and a step of faith. When we obey God in secret, God
rewards us openly as He did this woman.
What’s your asset? You may
feel that you have little to offer; your resources are few and little, but
there may be an asset somewhere in your possession which is going neglected.
There may be the equivalent of a jar of oil that represents unseen riches and
could be the answer to your problems. Ask the Lord what your asset is.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
· What
is the “asset” God has placed in my hands today, and how have I been using—or
neglecting—it?
· Who
are the “neighbours” God has positioned around me to play a role in my
advancement, and how open am I to receiving help from them?
· In
what areas do I need to take a step of obedience and faith so that God’s
multiplication can be activated in my life?
PRAYER: Thank you, God, the
multiplier of all substance, that as I take the step of faith and obedience to
use my assets for your glory, you will multiply my substance in Jesus’ name, amen.
