STRIFE-FREE ZONE!
Proverbs 13:10 NIV
Where there is strife, there
is pride, but wisdom is found in those who take advice.
Strife is one of the silent
destroyers of peace, unity, and relationships. It is more than a disagreement
or a difference of opinion. Strife carries bitterness, hostility, and
stubbornness. It creates an atmosphere where harmony is impossible and conflict
becomes the norm. The Bible describes strife as a by-product of pride—where
hearts refuse to yield, listen, or consider the feelings and perspectives of
others. Wherever pride stands tall, strife follows closely behind.
Strife is one of Satan’s
most effective weapons because it can destroy families, friendships, marriages,
ministries, and even communities. It eats away at unity and blinds people to
what truly matters. Scripture warns that anger, arrogance, and a hot temper
stir up strife. Many relationships collapse, partnerships dissolve, and even
churches divide because someone insists on being right rather than being
righteous.
Amos 3:3 asks, if two can walk
together without agreement? Jesus raises the standard even higher in Matthew
18:19 by showing that agreement is not only necessary but powerful. When two
people harmonize like musical instruments and pray in unity, Heaven responds.
Agreement unlocks divine results. But where strife reigns, unity dies and
blessings are hindered.
The Bible calls us to be
peacemakers, not troublemakers. Paul told Timothy to avoid foolish arguments
and to pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace. Romans 12:18 instructs us
to live at peace with everyone as much as possible, and Hebrews 12:14 urges us
to pursue peace with diligence and determination. Peace does not just happen;
it must be chased, nurtured, and protected.
Strife often begins with
pride—when someone refuses to consider another point of view. A strife-filled
person is unwilling to compromise, negotiate, apologize, or humble themselves.
They insist on being heard rather than understanding others. This attitude
isolates friends, fractures families, and weakens churches. The enemy loves
strife because it opens the door to confusion, discouragement, division, and
spiritual stagnation.
Scripture gives us several
examples showing the destructive nature of strife.
In Genesis 13, conflict
broke out between the herdsmen of Abram and Lot. Strife threatened their
relationship until Abram wisely chose peace by offering Lot the first choice of
land. His humility preserved unity and positioned him for God’s blessing.
In Genesis 26, Isaac faced
strife over wells he dug in Gerar. Instead of fighting, he moved on and dug new
wells. His peaceful response eventually brought him to Rehoboth—the place of
expansion and fruitfulness.
Strife also fuelled Korah’s
rebellion in Numbers 16 and contributed to the Israelites’ complaints in
Numbers 20. Every time strife appeared, trouble followed. Only godly wisdom and
humility could calm the situation.
Unity, on the other hand, is
the absence of strife. Psalm 133 describes unity as good and pleasant and
reveals that God commands His blessing where unity is present. Unity attracts
God, but strife drives Him away. Jesus said in John 13:35 that the world would
recognize His disciples by their love for one another. When believers engage in
strife, the watching world becomes confused. Strife damages our testimony and
makes the message of Christ unattractive. Proverbs 6:16–19 lists the things the
Lord hates, and one of them is the person who stirs up strife.
As believers, we must
intentionally create strife-free zones in our hearts, homes, relationships,
churches, and communities. Peace is not passive; it is a choice. It requires
humility, patience, forgiveness, and a willingness to listen. When we pursue peace,
we protect God’s presence, preserve unity, and make room for His blessings.
