THE ANCIENT PATH: A CALL BACK TO GOD’S WAY!
Jeremiah 6:16 CSB
This is what the LORD says:
Stand by the roadways and look. Ask about the ancient paths, "Which is the
way to what is good?" Then take it and find rest for yourselves. But they
protested, "We won't!"
Life often brings us to
crossroads—moments of decision, uncertainty, and longing. In these times, God
invites us to seek the ancient path, a way that is eternal and true. Jeremiah
6:16 reminds us to "stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient
paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it."
The ancient path is not
outdated; it is rooted in God’s unchanging character and revealed through
Scripture. It is the way of mercy according to Micah 6:8, justice, humility
stated in Philippians 2:3-4, and obedience as seen in John 14:15. In Jeremiah’s
time, the people had turned away from this path, choosing idols and shortcuts.
Yet God’s call remains today—to return to His faithful way. Just as we see
today, many have either turned completely from God or have somehow turned
spiritual things, including God to idolatry.
Jesus Himself embodies the
ancient path. In John 14:6, He declares, "I am the way, and the truth, and
the life." Walking this path means following Christ’s example of love,
sacrifice, and faithfulness. Which way are you walking? Have you deviated from
the ancient path that is Christ Jesus? Or have you found and adopted a way that
seem suitable and acceptable to you and society?
Consider the story of the
prodigal son in Luke 15:11-32. Though he wandered far, he found restoration
when he returned to the father’s house—the ancient path of repentance and
grace. This illustrates God’s patient invitation to come back and find rest.
Choosing the ancient path
requires intentionality. It means resisting the distractions and quick fixes of
our culture and instead embracing God’s wisdom as stated in Proverbs 3:5-6. And
not man’s wisdom, imbedded in theology, spiritism, religion and works,
advocated by today’s so-called ‘chosen’.
Choosing the ancient path
means trusting God’s timing and promises, even when the way seems hard or
unclear, as it always is when God is in it.
But how can we walk the
ancient path today? We must start by grounding our decisions in Scripture and
prayer. When faced with challenges, ask, "What would mercy, humility, and
obedience look like here?"
Our practical spiritual
disciplines are what connects us to God’s heart, through regular Bible reading,
prayer, worship, and fellowship. These habits help us discern God’s guidance
and strengthen your faith and grow in spiritual meaningful ways.
The ancient path is not
behind you—it is beneath your feet, waiting for you to walk in step with God.
This path is ever-present
because God’s guidance is not merely historical; it is living and active today, according to Hebrews 4:12. From the beginning, God has always placed His way
before His people, calling them to walk in alignment with His will. In Deuteronomy
30:19–20, God sets life and death before Israel and urges them to “choose
life,” reminding us that His path is continually offered in every moment and
every choice.
Psalm 119:105 affirms that
God’s Word is “a lamp to my feet and a light to my path,” showing that the
ancient path is illuminated right where we stand. It is not a distant road we
must travel back to, but a present invitation to walk with God daily. Jesus
reinforces this truth in Matthew 11:28–30 when He calls us to walk with Him and
find rest for our souls—rest that is found not in our own striving but in
learning His ways.
Even when the journey feels
unclear, God promises to guide each step stated in Isaiah 30:21. The ancient
path is therefore a present reality—God’s righteous way set before us, calling
us to trust, obey, and walk closely with Him.
In daily life, this might
look like choosing forgiveness over bitterness, serving others with humility,
or waiting patiently on God’s timing instead of rushing ahead. Remember, the
ancient path leads to rest—not because life is without trials, but because God
walks with us through them.
