THE EMPTY GIANT!
1 Samuel 17:4-11,45 TLB
Then Goliath, a Philistine
champion from Gath, came out of the Philistine ranks to face the forces of
Israel. He was a giant of a man, measuring over nine feet tall! He wore a
bronze helmet, a two-hundred-pound coat of mail, bronze leggings, and carried a
bronze javelin several inches thick, tipped with a twenty-five-pound iron
spearhead, and his armor bearer walked ahead of him with a huge shield. [8] He
stood and shouted across to the Israelis, "Do you need a whole army to
settle this? I will represent the Philistines, and you choose someone to
represent you, and we will settle this in single combat! [9] If your man is
able to kill me, then we will be your slaves. But if I kill him, then you must
be our slaves! [10] I defy the armies of Israel! Send me a man who will fight
with me!" [11] When Saul and the Israeli army heard this, they were
dismayed and frightened. [45] David shouted in reply, "You come to me with
a sword and a spear, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of the armies of
heaven and of Israel-the very God whom you have defied.
The Bible mentions several
giant groups and figures: the Nephilim, Anakim, Rephaim, Og king of Bashan, and
Goliath of Gath. They looked terrifying to people but were never a problem for
God’s power
Goliath looked
unstoppable—huge, strong, and armed with deadly weapons. He terrified Israel’s
army for forty days. But Goliath was an empty giant. Why? Because he stood
against the living God. Size and strength mean nothing when God is not on your
side.
1 Joh 4:4 affirms that, that
greater is the one inside us than any giant that comes against us.
What Does “Empty Giant” mean anyway?
An empty giant is anything
that looks big and scary but has no real power against God. It could be fear,
sickness, financial problems, or even people who seem powerful. They look
strong, but they are empty because they cannot defeat God’s plan.
What makes a Giant “empty”? Giants
represent anything that looks huge: fear, opposition, sin, demonic oppression,
or human pride and systems that exalt themselves against God. They seem full of
strength, but they have no lasting foundation because they stand against God’s
purpose.
When
God acts, their apparent greatness collapses; Og and the other giant clans in
Canaan were wiped out so Israel could inherit the land, showing that God can
clear away what seems unbeatable.
The difference in every
giant story is faith, faith empties the giants: Joshua and Caleb in Numbers
14:30 believed and declared, “The Lord is with us…we will devour them,” while
the rest of Israel saw themselves as grasshoppers. Faith shifts focus from the
size of the problem to the faithfulness of God.
Giants fall when believers
hold onto God’s promises instead of the report of fear, as seen repeatedly in
Israel’s conquest of the land.
Goliath is an “empty giant”:
armed, loud, and intimidating, yet spiritually empty because he defied “the God
of the armies of Israel.” David saw that the real issue was not size, but who
stood with God.
David came “in the name of
the Lord,” and one stone brought the giant down, revealing that his armour and
boasting could not stand before covenant faith. What looked solid was hollow
when measured against God’s word.
Is there something huge
staring you intimidatingly in the face? Because of the size, influence or authority.
Fear not! It’s just as empty as Goliath and remember that it’s only a shadow.
David was small and had no armour,
but he had something Goliath didn’t—God’s presence and faith. Which you do too.
David didn’t fight in his
own strength. He trusted God completely. That’s why the giant fell.
Be determined not to fear
empty giants. The problems may look big, but they are powerless against God a
seen in Proverbs 21:30.
Trust God’s strength
according to Psalm 33:16, not your own. Victory comes from God, not from size
or weapons.
Always speak faith, not
fear. David declared God’s power before he fought. As Romans 8:31 – “If God is
for us, who can be against us?”
The Empty Giant highlight
how God exposes the hollowness of anything that challenges His rule and how, by
faith, believers can stand firm, advance, and inherit what He has promised.
Be sure not to allow empty
giants intimidate you this year. Modern giants may include addictions,
generational patterns, intimidating people, systems of injustice, or inner
voices of condemnation that look bigger than obedience. In Christ, these powers
are disarmed at the cross, even if they still roar for a season.
