THE FEAR OF THE LORD!
Proverbs 1:7 AMPC
The reverent and worshipful
fear of the Lord is the beginning and the principal and choice part of
knowledge [its starting point and its essence]; but fools despise skillful and
godly Wisdom, instruction, and discipline.
The fear of the Lord is the
core truth of the Bible, the foundation of the gospel, and the essence of the
Christian walk. Without it, every other pursuit of knowledge becomes meaningless.
The running theme of the book of proverbs is the fear of the Lord, and it's all
written as a statement of fact.
The fear of the Lord means
reverent obedience to God, the appropriate response to his authority and power.
It is not terror but deep respect and awe that leads to submission.
Our search for wisdom and
knowledge begins and ends with the fear of the Lord. God takes delight in those
who fear him and have put their trust and hope in him according to Psalm 147:11.
This reverential fear is a cognitive
awareness of what God wants and does, guiding us away from evil and teaching us
how to apply biblical principles.
The fear of the Lord is the
beginning of knowledge! Without this fear, every other thing, every other kind
of knowledge is made redundant and meaningless. It is the fear of the Lord that
increases wisdom and gives understanding which increases learning according to
proverbs 9:9-10.
We look at our lives today,
at the church and the whole body of Christ only to realise that the fear of the
Lord is seriously lacking. People no longer have reverential fear for God; everyone
seems to be mixing God with anything and everything without making him the
focal point of existence. When we look at job 28:28 we see that the sauce of
true wisdom is God which seems to be a truth that is largely ignored in our
world today.
The world may want to
convince us that wisdom comes from learning experiences and reading but not
according to Colossians 2:3 the fear of the Lord is the beginning of both true wisdom
and true knowledge.
The fear of the Lord is the
fountain of life according to proverbs 14:27 that chases one from the snares of
death. In other words, the fear of God offers a fountain that refreshes, cools,
beautifies and gives us life, The fountain of life overrides the source of
pain.
When we have the fear of
God, the reverential fear of His Majesty it becomes a fountain of life to us.
If we desire to understand God’s
wisdom, we must search for it like a precious jewel according to proverbs 2:5.
Sadly, the fear of the Lord
is none existence and sin has become a stronghold,
and lukewarmness prevails.
The body of Christ no longer
has reverential fear for God, we, like the Israelites of old and now doing and
acting as if there is no God.
This absence has led to
chaos in the world—justice and righteousness are rare, and stability is
elusive. Only the fear of the Lord can override these negativities.
Stability, the most elusive
thing of our generation can only be found in and through the fear of the Lord that
overrides all the negativities in our society now. According to Isaiah 33:6, wisdom
and knowledge gained through the fear of the Lord provides stability, strength,
and salvation.
Psalm 34:11 invites us to
come to the Lord to be taught how to fear the Lord and gain wisdom and
knowledge to achieve a good life.
