WITHOUT LOVE!
1 Corinthians 13:2 TLB
If I had the gift of
prophecy and knew all about what is going to happen in the future, knew
everything about everything, but didn't love others, what good would it do?
Even if I had the gift of faith so that I could speak to a mountain and make it
move, I would still be worth nothing at all without love.
What’s the difference
between love and obligation? Why is it that we can love someone without feeling
obligated, and sometimes feel obligated without truly loving? Honestly, it’s straightforward.
There are plenty of things we do just because we feel we must, without any real
love for the person we’re doing them for. On the other hand, when we do love,
that love often pushes us to do something special—to bring some joy, to bless
someone, even if we didn’t have to.
So yes, it’s possible to
have one without the other. They don’t always have to go together, and things
can work—or not—either way.
The Bible is clear about
this in 2 Corinthians 9:6—what you sow is what you get. If you’re generous,
generous things will come back to you. If you’re stingy, well, don’t expect too
much in return.
When we act out of
obligation, there’s no real love behind it; it’s just something that has to be
done. Maybe we’re worried about what will happen if we don’t, or maybe we’re
after some sort of recognition or reward. Whatever the reason, when it’s just obligation,
our hearts aren’t really in it. There’s no deep connection there.
But love—love changes
things. Love makes us go further than we ever thought possible. Sometimes, we
do what we’d never even consider doing for someone, all because we truly care.
In Matthew 5:41, it talks about going the extra mile. Sometimes this means we
just want to do a little more, put a smile on someone’s face, or go above and
beyond. Other times, that “extra mile” is simply because we sense there’s a
reward or benefit at the end, and that’s what’s driving us.
Whatever we do, Colossians
3:23 reminds us to do it as if we’re doing it for the Lord. Whether your action
comes from love or obligation, let the real reason be that you’re offering it
up to God.
Joy isn’t something you can
buy. Neither is the fruit of the Spirit. They’re not like items in a shop—these
are gifts given freely. God wants us to share the joy, the peace, the kindness
we’ve received with others. We’ve been shown mercy and compassion, so we’re
expected to pass that on. It’s both a push from inside—thanks to God’s
love—and, at the same time, something the Bible calls us to do as Christians. An
obligation!
So, what about you? Will you
go the extra mile for someone, even if you think they don’t deserve it, or
maybe can’t give you anything back? Even when we don’t have much, if there’s
something we can give, God always finds a way to fill in the gaps.
It doesn’t take much to
bring a little warmth to someone’s day—to make them smile, to pay them a
compliment, or simply to be kind. Even something as small as a cup of water can
matter as Matthew 10:41-42 states—a tiny act that, in God’s eyes, brings blessing.
If you’ve got more than you need, why not give a little to someone who has
none?
It’s easy to hold back.
Maybe we think others don’t deserve our kindness, or won’t appreciate it, or we
feel like we just don’t have it in us to give. But none of us deserved the
mercy, salvation, or love God’s given us. And yet, He gave it to us anyway.
I remember mentioning once
in a meeting that we probably all had outfits just sitting in our wardrobes,
going to waste. The next day, one of the ladies showed up in beautiful outfit,
saying she realized after I spoke that she really did have so much she wasn’t
using, and decided to give some of it away. Funny enough, I didn’t ask, but
some of those lovely clothes found their way to me—and I was thrilled! She gave
out of love, but also because the Bible encouraged her to. And in giving, she opened
space for more blessings in her own life.
So, what will you feel
obligated to do today? What will you feel compelled, by love, to do? What kind
of seed will you plant? Take a moment to think about it. Remember, everything
we have is from God. We’re just holding onto it for a while, maybe even keeping
it safe for someone else.
Let yourself enjoy what
you’ve been given and never forget—God can always provide more than we could
ever give away. Our Father is both obligated and moved by love to bless us—not
because we’ve done everything right, but because we’re precious to Him.
Let’s try to do the same.
Let’s be willing—out of both scripture and love—to give to others what God
wants them to have, even when it feels like they don’t deserve it. After all,
we didn’t deserve it either, but God gave to us anyway, simply because we’re
His children.
