GOOD SUCCESS!

Joshua 1:8-9 AMPC

This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success. [9] Have not I commanded you? Be strong, vigorous, and very courageous. Be not afraid, neither be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

Everyone wants to succeed and remain successful but, according to the world standard. Have you ever considered God’s definition of success? The world usually links success with money, status, and recognition.

God’s definition of success is much deeper: it is good success—success that’s rooted in obedience, godly character, and His presence. Especially as Deuteronomy 8:18 says God’s the one who gives us the power to get wealth which is the main way the world measures success.

Joshua is standing right at the edge of the Promised Land, with a huge task in front of him but, God doesn’t give him a battle plan first, but a spiritual blueprint.

From verse 8 we understand that good success begins with God’s word.

First is to meditate on the Word Day and night (translate to mean all the time). This isn’t rushed reading; it’s slow, thoughtful reflection—letting Scripture shape how we think, what we want, and how we decide.

Psalm 1:2–3 shows what comes out of this: stability, fruitfulness, and endurance, like a tree planted by streams of water.

Are you meditating on the word enough for you to speak when needed? The instruction is to “Speak the Word.”

This is essentially what “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth” Means.

When we speak God’s Word, it strengthens our faith and brings our hearts in line with what God says is true.

Jesus does this in Matthew 4:4, responding to pressure and temptation by declaring Scripture.

The Lord gives us the formula for success- “Be careful to do according to all that is written in it.” Obey the Word! Obedience is what connects what God shows us to what we actually experience. It’s the bridge between revelation and reality. Instead of going through several trial by error, success by accident, or repeated trial and failure that may lead to success, we should obey the Lord’s simple instructions are founded on His word and led by His spirit.

Think of Noah in Genesis 6:22, Abraham in Hebrews 11:8, and Peter in Luke 5:5—each one stepped out in obedience, sometimes without fully understanding.

Good success requires courage according to verse 9.

To succeed, we must have the courage to trust God’s presence – “For the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”

Courage doesn’t mean we never feel afraid. It means we move forward because we’re aware God is with us right in the middle of the fear and have the courage to step into the unknown.

Joshua did just that! He had never led a nation into battle or into a new land before. This was all unfamiliar territory. But his confidence wasn’t his résumé; it was the promise of God’s presence.

He had the courage to stand firm in obedience. We must always remember that obedience will sometimes clash with culture, cost us comfort, or invite criticism. Still, God’s promise stands: “I will be with you.”

Good success is a partnership with God in every way.

Joshua’s victories weren’t mainly about smart tactics; they were about listening to and following God.

Jericho’s walls fell because of obedience to an unusual instruction, not a clever military plan in Joshua 6.

Good success grows out of walking in step with God, not racing ahead of Him on our own.

Always asking the Lord before we make that move, in all areas of our lives leads us to good success and avoids failure and disappointments.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

·       In what areas of my life am I still measuring success by the world’s standards instead of God’s?

·       What practical changes can I make to deepen my daily meditation on God’s Word, my confession of it, and my obedience to it?

·       What specific step of courage might God be asking me to take in this season?

PRAYER: Father, thank You for showing me the path to good success. Teach me to love Your Word, to meditate on it, to speak it, and to obey it with a willing heart. Give me courage to follow You boldly, trusting that You are with me wherever I go. Lead me into the kind of success that honours You and changes me from the inside out. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
