NOT TAUGHT! CAUGHT!
1 Corinthians 11:1-2 AMPC
Pattern yourselves after me
[follow my example], as I imitate and follow Christ (the Messiah). [2] I
appreciate and commend you because you always remember me in everything and
keep firm possession of the traditions (the substance of my instructions), just
as I have [verbally] passed them on to you.
Some lessons are spoken, but
the most powerful ones are lived. Scripture shows repeatedly that
transformation happens not only through instruction but through imitation. What
we model often shapes others far more deeply than what we explain. This is the
heart of “Not Taught! Caught.” Many of the most important truths in life are
not learned because someone taught them, but because someone lived them in
front of us.
The Examples of Jesus as the
perfect teacher, were demonstrated long before they were spoken. He didn’t
simply teach about prayer—He prayed as seen in Matthew 14:23. He didn’t only
talk about compassion—He moved with compassion throughout the bible. He didn’t
merely instruct on forgiveness—He forgave, even from the cross.
It’s no surprise that the
disciples didn’t ask, “Teach us how to preach.” They said, “Lord, teach us to
pray” in Luke 11:1. They had watched Him slip away early in the morning,
withdraw to quiet places, and depend on the Father. They caught His lifestyle
before they received His teaching.
Paul’s life is worth imitating,
for he understood this principle deeply. When he said, “Imitate me as I imitate
Christ,” he wasn’t boasting—he was acknowledging the responsibility of
spiritual influence. His letters contain rich doctrine, but his life was the
living curriculum. He taught generosity, yet he worked with his hands. He
taught endurance, yet he endured beatings, prisons, and storms. He taught love,
yet he wept with the churches. Much of what the early believers learned, they
caught by watching him.
More lessons are caught than
taught in the home. Proverbs 22:6 reminds us that training is more than
instruction—it is formation. Children absorb what surrounds them. They may
forget a lecture on kindness, but they remember how their parents treated the
neighbour who offended them. They may forget the words “be grateful,” but they
catch gratitude when they see it practiced at the dinner table, in prayer, and
in giving. They may not recall a teaching on faith, but they catch faith when
they see a parent praying through storms instead of panicking. Children imitate
what they observe long before they understand what they hear.
The Church is meant to be a living
example to the world as James 1:22 calls us to be doers of the word, not
hearers only. A church that teaches forgiveness but does not practice it
remains shallow. A church that teaches generosity but does not live it becomes
theoretical. A church that teaches holiness but does not walk in it loses its
witness. People catch the culture of a church long before they understand its
doctrine. Our lived example becomes the loudest sermon.
How about you? Are you learning
or catching? You may learn something but not catch the lasting dept of it.
There are everyday lessons that
we can catch, such as:
- Mercy caught when someone
is restored instead of rejected.
- Integrity caught when
someone refuses a dishonest shortcut.
- Humility is caught when a
leader serves quietly without applause.
- Faith is caught when
someone trusts God in uncertainty.
The most powerful lessons
are lived, not lectured. Don’t just learn! Don’t just be taught! Catch the
dept!
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
· What
are people catching from the way I live, speak, and respond daily?
· Where
is God inviting me to model Christ more visibly in my home, church, or
workplace?
· Who
has shaped my life through their example, and how can I now become that example
for someone else?
PRAYER: Father, thank You
for the gift of example, first in Christ, and then through the people You place
around us. Help me live in a way that reflects Your heart, so that others may
catch Your love, Your mercy, and Your truth through my life. Make me a living
testimony of Your grace. Amen.
