OBEY MY VOICE.
Jeremiah 7:21-26 AMPC
Thus says the Lord of hosts,
the God of Israel: Add your burnt offerings to your sacrifices and eat the
flesh [if you will. It will avail you nothing]. [22] For in the day that I
brought them out of the land of Egypt, I did not speak to your fathers or command
them concerning burnt offerings or sacrifices. [23] But this thing I did
command them: Listen to and obey My voice, and I will be your God and you will
be My people; and walk in the whole way that I command you, that it may be well
with you. [24] But they would not listen to and obey Me or bend their ear [to
Me], but followed the counsels and the stubborn promptings of their own evil
hearts and minds, and they turned their backs and went in reverse instead of
forward. [25] Since the day that your fathers came forth out of the land of
Egypt to this day, I have persistently sent to you all My servants the
prophets, sending them daily, early and late. [26] Yet the people would not
listen to and obey Me or bend their ears [to Me], but stiffened their necks and
behaved worse than their fathers.
John 10:27 reminds us that
we are the sheep who hear and follow the Master’s voice. The question is: are
we truly hearing Him—and obeying Him? God’s voice echoes throughout Scripture,
yet many believers struggle to recognise or respond to it. Obedience is not
optional in the Christian walk; it is foundational. Leviticus 8:4 makes it
plain: we obey God simply because He is God. That is enough.
Obedience is an act or
instance of submitting to an authority. It is compliance with the demands or
requests of someone over us. The general words for obedience in both Hebrew and
Greek refer to hearing a superior authority.
God is the superior authority
on all things and supreme in power. His voice is still according to 1 Kings
19:12-13, but louder than every other voice.
Obeying God’s voice is a
requirement, not a suggestion. Isaiah 1:19 promises that if we obey Him, we
will enjoy the good of the land. Obedience is therefore a key that unlocks a
victorious life.
But do we obey God through
His Word—or only through His servants? Many believers quickly obey their
pastors or leaders yet argue with God’s simple instructions. Jesus calls us to
take up our cross daily as stated in Matthew 16:24, and that requires
consistent obedience. Obedience is not seasonal, emotional, or based on
convenience; it is a lifestyle. God’s command in Jeremiah 7:23 is
straightforward: “Obey My voice.” He did not ask Israel for sacrifices—He asked
for obedience. When we walk in righteousness, God acknowledges us as His
people, and He becomes our God in experience, not just in confession.
Obedience is duty. Jesus
fulfilled His duty to the Father through His obedience unto death according to Philippians
2:8. Likewise, we must submit to God’s commands. To obey God means to comply
fully with everything He instructs. We cannot thrive spiritually without
obedience. Like Balaam in Numbers 23:12, we must speak only what God puts in
our mouths. When we obey God by searching and keeping His Word, He keeps us.
When we obey His Word as Joshua 1:8 instructs, He prospers our way.
Isaiah 30:21 assures us that
as we walk in righteousness, we will hear God’s voice guiding us. His voice may
not always be audible, but His leading is real, practical, and unmistakable.
Yet many of us choose which parts of our lives to surrender and which to keep
back. We obey God in some areas and ignore Him in others—especially when His
instructions challenge our comfort or plans.
Some believers even obey
human voices over God’s when the stakes feel high. But Deuteronomy 26:16
commands us to obey all God’s ordinances wholeheartedly—with all our heart and
soul.
Peter and John in Acts 4:19
were forbidden to speak in Jesus’ name. They risked imprisonment, stoning, and
death, yet they chose to obey God rather than man. Today, we face similar
pressures—subtle or overt—to prioritise worldly wisdom over divine instruction.
But is it right to obey men against the will of God? When God commands us to
speak, can we dare to remain silent?
God is the highest
authority. He desires us to be His treasured possession—but only if we obey His
voice completely according to Exodus 19:5. The question remains: Will you obey
His voice?
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- Do I recognise the Lord’s
voice enough to obey Him consistently, or do I rationalise my
disobedience?
- How do I intentionally
listen for and obey God’s voice in my daily life?
- How willing am I to obey
God even when His instructions are difficult or inconvenient?
PRAYER: Lord, help me to
hear Your voice clearly and obey You promptly, fully, and joyfully—no matter
the instruction. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
