PIDGIN SUGAR LIPS, POISONOUS HEART!

Psalm 55:21 Dia words dey smooth like butter, but dia heart strong like stone. Dia word smooth well-well like pomade, but na dagger dey under dia tongue!.

Words get weight oh—far more than we realise. Some kain talk fit sound rude, sharp, or insensitive, but dem no get bad mind inside. Other words, however, dey carefully arrange to wound, deceive, or manipulate. Bible don warn us many times say even if words sweet for ear, the heart fit dey corrupt. Some people sabi talk with charm, warmth, and fake kindness, but under all that sweetness, their motive no pure. Scripture no dey hide this truth; e dey warn us make we no fall for flattering lips and make we check our own heart so we no go fall into the same trap.

Sweet words, corrupt motives!

David paint picture of person wey dey talk soft, reassuring, even comforting, but inside their heart, wahala dey. Na this be “sugar for lips but poison for heart”—dangerous contradiction where wetin person dey show outside no match wetin dey inside. No be just hypocrisy; na deliberate deception. This kain mismatch between appearance and reality dey make such people spiritually and relationally dangerous.

We dey meet people like this for life—people wey their kindness na only for surface. Their words dey soothe, but their intention dey scatter trust. This kain duality dey push us to sharpen our discernment and depend on Holy Spirit to know when sweetness dey cover harm.

The Pharisees get polished speech but poisoned hearts.

Jesus face this matter head-on with the religious leaders of His time. Dem sabi talk the right talk, pray impressive prayers, and use religious language wey dey make people respect them. But behind all the polished grammar, their hearts stubborn, proud, and far from true devotion. Jesus expose them, saying, “These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” For Matthew 15:8.

Their problem no be ignorance—na insincerity. Dem master the performance of holiness but neglect the real substance. This warn us say eloquence no be integrity, and religious fluency no be spiritual maturity.

A kiss wey hide betrayal!

One of the strongest Bible examples of deceptive affection na Judas’ kiss. Something wey suppose show loyalty turn to betrayal. Jesus ask am for Luke 22:48, “Judas, you dey betray the Son of Man with kiss?” The act tender, but the heart behind am wicked. Kiss suppose show love. Betrayal na the opposite. Judas show us how appearance fit deceive.

This one remind us say: no be everybody wey approach us with warmth dey truly for us. Sometimes the worst harm dey come from people wey hide their intention under false affection.

God’s desire simple but deep: He want our speech and our heart to align.

David pray for Psalm 19:14, “Make the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart dey pleasing for Your sight.”

True transformation no dey come from trying to sound honest. E dey come when God reshape our heart so our words go naturally reflect His work inside us. When God heal and cleanse our heart, our speech go automatically become life-giving.

To walk in integrity mean: no use words as weapon, resist the temptation to manipulate with flattery, choose authenticity even when e hard.

E also mean make we ask God to show us areas where we dey project image wey no match our inside.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

Where I dey see gap between wetin I talk and wetin I truly think or feel?

I don allow flattering words influence me instead of checking person character?

Which spiritual practices dey help keep my heart honest, soft, and aligned with God so my words go naturally carry truth and grace?

PRAYER: Lord, cleanse and steady my heart so my words no go be performance but true reflection of Your work inside me. Give me discernment to see through flattery and sweet words wey hide harm. Teach me to speak with honesty, kindness, and integrity. Align my heart and my mouth so both go bring You honour. In Jesus name, amen.
