RESET!
Isaiah 38:1-6,8 TLB
It was just before all this
that Hezekiah became deathly sick, and Isaiah the prophet (Amoz' son) went to
visit him and gave him this message from the Lord: "Set your affairs in
order, for you are going to die; you will not recover from this illness."
[2] When Hezekiah heard this, he turned his face to the wall and prayed: [3]
"O Lord, don't you remember how true I've been to you and how I've always
tried to obey you in everything you said?" Then he broke down with great
sobs. [4] So the Lord sent another message to Isaiah: [5] "Go and tell
Hezekiah that the Lord God of your forefather David hears you praying and sees
your tears and will let you live fifteen more years. [6] He will deliver you
and this city from the king of Assyria. I will defend you, says the Lord, [8] I
will send the sun backwards ten degrees as measured on Ahaz's sundial!" So
the sun retraced ten degrees that it had gone down!
Reset means to set something
up again, to cause something to return to a neutral state. It is to change the
reaction of something or restore it to its original condition—to start again
without any previous history.
Hezekiah poured out his
grief to the Lord after he received a death sentence. With a humble heart,
leaning on God’s mercy for healing and submitting to God’s values, he asked the
Lord to meet his need. God answered and reset his life and destiny.
Reset demonstrates God’s
grace and power because the control of destiny is in God’s hands. He responds
to our needs by remaining faithful to His covenant.
While Hezekiah based his
request and desire for healing on God’s faithfulness, God healed him and
granted him a reset based on His grace and mercy.
God manifested His reset
through the sundial!
The miracle of the sundial
proved that God will always be God—the only One with the power to adjust and
redirect nature.
God can reset our destinies
by setting them ten steps backward, just as He did with Hezekiah’s sundial.
Hezekiah’s sundial did not
move backward naturally—that is impossible. Only with manual intervention or
industrial magnetic mechanisms could the dial be turned backward. Hezekiah
likely understood this, which is why he asked God to do something naturally
impossible to prove His faithfulness.
Many of us face all kinds of
frightening situations that may even make us question God’s authority and
power. But as Matthew 19:26 reminds us, God specializes in the impossible.
Or perhaps the sundial
stopped moving because it was stuck from rust due to lack of sun exposure. In
the same way, many people—including believers—are stuck in life, in difficult
situations, marriages, and other challenges because of a lack of exposure to
the light and Word of God, according to Psalm 119:105. When we do not allow the
light of God to fill us and His Word to direct us, we become stuck on a rusty
dial, unable to move smoothly and graciously through life. Hezekiah found the
opportunity to ask the Lord for a reset; we can do the same.
Joshua also experienced a
reset—not just for himself but for the entire tribe of Israel in Joshua 10,
when he asked the God of the impossible to suspend the natural workings of the
sun and moon, giving them the opportunity to change the direction of the battle
in their favour.
Hezekiah did not ask for
anything specific—not even healing. He simply asked God to remember how he had
walked faithfully before Him. And God, who knows the thoughts and intents of
our hearts according to Hebrews 4:13, saw his heart and offered him a reset.
The Lord reset the sundial
by moving it ten degrees backward. Times and seasons are in God’s hands and
moving something ten steps backward or forward is not impossible for Him. God
can move you from zero to infinity in the twinkling of an eye.
God has used the number ten
from the very beginning to signify completion and perfection of His laws,
principles, and order. For example:
- In Genesis 1, God said
“let there be” ten times.
- He gave the Ten
Commandments to reset Israel’s judicial system in Exodus 20.
- He established the law of
tithing (ten percent) in Deuteronomy 14:22–24.
- The Passover lamb was
selected on the tenth day of the first month to reset Passover in Exodus 12:3,
and the tenth day of the seventh month was set aside for atonement.
God can reset your
situation, and He already has a reset plan for you—if you will dare to ask for
it.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Where in my life do I sense
that I have become “stuck on a rusty dial,” lacking the light of God’s Word? In
what practical ways can I intentionally realign myself with His truth and
guidance?
Like Hezekiah, what areas of
my life require a bold request for God’s mercy and a supernatural reset—and am
I willing to bring them before Him with humility and faith?
What impossible situation am
I trusting God to reverse, just as He reversed Hezekiah’s sundial?
PRAYER: Lord, please reset
my life by Your mercy. Restore what is broken, realign my steps, and let Your
light guide me into the path You have prepared for me, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
