SPIRITUAL INHERITANCE!
Ephesians 1:11-14 AMPC
In Him we also were made
[God's] heritage (portion) and we obtained an inheritance; for we had been
foreordained (chosen and appointed beforehand) in accordance with His purpose,
Who works out everything in agreement with the counsel and design of His [own]
will, [12] So that we who first hoped in Christ [who first put our confidence
in Him have been destined and appointed to] live for the praise of His glory!
[13] In Him you also who have heard the Word of Truth, the glad tidings
(Gospel) of your salvation, and have believed in and adhered to and relied on
Him, were stamped with the seal of the long-promised Holy Spirit. [14] That
[Spirit] is the guarantee of our inheritance [the firstfruits, the pledge and
foretaste, the down payment on our heritage], in anticipation of its full
redemption and our acquiring [complete] possession of it-to the praise of His
glory.
This is one of the clearest
statements that your inheritance is rooted in Christ Himself. It speaks to
purpose, calling, and belonging. Inheritance is a Legal transmission of
property after death. The word “inherit” generally means to “take possession.”
Psalm 16:5–6 declare that
God is our portion. This verse reframes inheritance not as a thing, but as God
Himself. It’s deeply personal and grounding.
In the New Testament mostly,
"inheritance" speaks of blessings that moves from the earthly to the
spiritual level.
According to Colossians 1:13
we have been translated from one realm to another from darkness to light, from
physical to spiritual, from sinner to saint. The blood of Christ gives us a new
identity which is needed to activate and access our spiritual inheritance.
As believers, we received
our inheritance at the death of Jesus Christ, the birthright of every
Spirit-born man. A birthright that is activated and accessible when we become
born-again as stated in 2 Corinthians 5 :17.
Galatians 3:29 offers us a covenant
and promise - “If you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s offspring, heirs
according to promise.” Connecting us to the ancient promises of God, the
spiritual lineage.
The ultimate spiritual
inheritance is the blessing of eternal
life according to, Matthew 25:34. Therefore, every man in Christ has a unique
and special position by virtue of their salvation to inherit eternal life which
include every spiritual blessings both on earth and in heaven according to
Ephesians 1:3. Part of that inheritance is that we're chosen, redeemed,
sanctified, accepted, loved, forgiven, graced, spirit filled and more.
A natural man strives to
leave inheritance (perishable inheritance) for his children as stated in
proverbs 13:22, how much more God who loves us more than any man, will leave both
physical and spiritual inheritance for us his children.
In God’s kingdom our
position is different.
Ephesians 2:6 says part of
our inheritance is that we were buried with Christ, rose from death with him,
our inner man spiritually resembles Christ, and our physical man should ideally
emulate him in manner and speech, and this should elevate us to a higher level
from that of the unbeliever. Above principalities and powers.
We are heirs with Christ
according to Romans 8:17. This is the verse people quote when they want to
emphasize authority, identity, and shared inheritance with Jesus.
For us to walk in our
spiritual inheritance, as one sitting together with Christ, we need to adhere
to the command in Genesis 1:28 to "dominate". No matter where you are
in life, it's not meant to be permanent, it's not meant to harm you, but it is
to bring you into full maturity in Christ, your situation is a work in progress
in God's hands to bring you into your inheritance.
Unlike the prodigal son in
Luke 15:11-35 who asked for his share of inheritance while his father was still
alive, unfortunately he was not mature enough to manage the inheritance just as
the book of James 1:2-4 cautioned, maturity is the key to activating our
inheritance.
In spite of his disregard
and disobedience, his father was still eager for his return.
This is exactly how the Lord
regards His children when they wonder away from faith. The Lord knows you can't
manage your inheritance on your own, and even if you squander and misuse it
like the prodigal son, you'll never deplete the Lord's storehouse. The Lord is
eagerly waiting for us to walk in the path of righteousness, dominion and
victory daily as part of our spiritual inheritance, an advantage only open to
believers.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
· In
what ways am I actively walking in the spiritual inheritance I received through
Christ’s death and resurrection?
· Which
areas of my life still need maturity so I can rightly steward the inheritance
God has entrusted to me?
· How
consciously do I live from my position of advantage—seated with Christ above
principalities and powers?
PRAYER: Thank You, Lord for
the spiritual inheritance in Christ Jesus. I pray for the grace to be good steward
of my inheritance in Christ, that I may custardy it for the next generation in
Jesus’ name, amen.
