CHILD-FRIENDLY CHALLENGING THE LAW OF GRAVITY!
2 Kings 6:1-7 GNT
One day the group of
prophets that Elisha was in charge of complained to him, "The place where
we live is too small! [2] Give us permission to go to the Jordan and cut down
some trees, so that we can build a place to live." "All right,"
Elisha answered. [3] One of them urged him to go with them; he agreed, [4] and
they set out together. When they arrived at the Jordan, they began to work. [5]
As one of them was cutting down a tree, suddenly his iron ax head fell in the
water. "What shall I do, sir?" he exclaimed to Elisha. "It was a
borrowed ax!" [6] "Where did it fall?" Elisha asked. The man
showed him the place, and Elisha cut off a stick, threw it in the water, and
made the ax head float. [7] "Take it out," he ordered, and the man
reached down and picked it up.
Gravity is a rule God made
that says, “What goes up must come down.” Heavy things sink, and light things
float. But in 2 Kings 6, God shows us that He is stronger than any rule He
created.
The sons of the prophets
were building a bigger place to live. While one of them was cutting wood, the
iron axe head flew off the handle and fell into the river. Iron always sinks,
and this axe head was borrowed, so the young man was very upset. He cried, “Oh
no, my master! It was borrowed!”
Elisha, the prophet, stayed
calm. He asked, “Where did it fall?” When the young man showed him the spot,
Elisha cut a stick, threw it into the water, and something amazing happened—the
iron floated! God made something heavy rise to the top. He showed that nothing
is impossible for Him.
This story teaches us that
God cares when we lose something important. He cares when things go wrong. He
cares when we feel helpless. Just like the axe head sank, sometimes our joy,
courage, or hope feels like it sinks too. But God can bring it back.
God also asks us, “Where did
it fall?” He wants us to remember where we got hurt, where we stopped trying,
or where we felt sad. Not to make us feel bad, but so He can help us again.
And just like Elisha told
the young man, “Pick it up,” God brings help close to us—but we must reach out
and take it.
God is not limited by
anything. He can make iron float, open doors, fix problems, and restore what we
think is gone forever.
