CHILD-FRIENDLY MEMORIAL STONES!
Genesis 28:18 GNT
Jacob got up early next
morning, took the stone that was under his head, and set it up as a memorial.
Then he poured olive oil on it to dedicate it to God.
In the Bible, God often
teaches His people to remember the good things He has done. God knows we forget
easily, so He gives us special ways to stop and think about His miracles.
One great example is in Joshua
4. When God stopped the Jordan River and the people walked across on dry
ground, He told Joshua to pick twelve stones from the river. These stones were
to be a memorial—a reminder of God’s power. When children later asked, “What do
these stones mean?” the parents could say, “This is where God helped us!”
In 1 Samuel 7:12, Samuel
also set up a stone and called it Ebenezer, which means “stone of help.” It was
his way of saying, “God has helped us all the way until now.”
We see this again with Jacob
in Genesis 28. After God spoke to him in a dream, Jacob took the stone he slept
on, stood it up, and poured oil on it. That stone became a reminder that God
had met him there.
God wanted His people to
remember His words too. In Deuteronomy 27, He told them to write His laws on
large stones so they would never forget who they belonged to.
Today, we may not build
stone piles, but we can still make memorial stones in our own way. They might
be:
- Writing down answered
prayers
- Marking special dates in
our Bible
- Singing songs that remind
us of God
- Sharing stories of God’s
goodness with our family
Memorial stones help us
remember that the same God who helped people in the Bible is the God who helps
us today. And the greatest reminder of all is Jesus, who told us, “Do this in
remembrance of Me.”
