GIVE WITHOUT AUDIENCE!

Matthew 6:3-4 TLB

But when you do a kindness to someone, do it secretly-don't tell your left hand what your right hand is doing. [4] And your Father, who knows all secrets, will reward you.

Giving is one of the most powerful expressions of love in the kingdom of God. Yet Jesus teaches that the way we give matters just as much as the act itself. It’s a command that when we give to the needy, no one, not even our hands, left hand know what your right hand is doing, our giving must be in secret. But today, giving has become a performance, comparison, and a show, the desire to be seen. It seems no one gives these days without an audience, the cameras are ready, the selfie sticks are handy and the people to cheers are gathered.

Jesus is not condemning public generosity; He is confronting the motives behind it. Earlier in the chapter, He warns against giving “to be honoured by others” in verse 2. The issue is not visibility but intention. God looks at the heart according to 1 Samuel 16:7, and He desires that our giving flows from love, compassion, and obedience—not from the need for applause.

Giving in secret is not about hiding; it is about purity. It is about cultivating a heart that is more concerned with God’s approval than human recognition. When we give without audience, we shift the spotlight from ourselves to God. We acknowledge that every good thing we have comes from Him says James 1:17, and we return it to Him without demanding credit.

This kind of giving forms us. It trains our hearts to be humble, to be free from pride, and to resist the subtle temptation to use generosity as a way of building our reputation. It teaches us to trust that God sees—even when no one else does.

One of the most beautiful examples of hidden generosity is found in the story of the widow’s offering in Mark 12:41–44. She gave two small coins—an amount so insignificant that no one else would have noticed. But Jesus noticed. He saw her heart, her sacrifice, and her devotion. Her giving was not loud, but it was sincere. She gave without audience, and heaven recorded it. Yet, today, people not only have an audience in their giving, but they also even mention how much they are giving.

Another example is found in Acts 9:36–39, where we meet Tabitha (Dorcas). She was known for her acts of kindness and charity, especially toward widows. She didn’t give to be praised; she gave because compassion lived in her. Her generosity was so genuine that when she died, the widows stood around Peter weeping and showing the garments she had made for them. Her quiet giving left a loud legacy.

Even Jesus Himself models this principle. Throughout the Gospels, He often healed people and then instructed them not to tell anyone (Mark 1:43–44). He wasn’t seeking fame; He was fulfilling the Father’s will. His life teaches us that true greatness is often hidden, and true generosity does not need an audience.

Hidden giving still happens today. It looks like the person who pays for someone’s groceries anonymously. It looks like the neighbour who leaves a bag of food at a struggling family’s door. It looks like the believer who quietly supports a missionary, a single mother, or a student without ever mentioning it. It looks like the friend who prays, encourages, and gives time, energy, and love without expecting anything in return.

These acts may never make headlines, but they make heaven rejoice. They reflect the heart of the Father, who Himself gives generously and often invisibly. He sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous according to Matthew 5:45. He sustains us daily in ways we rarely notice. He is the God who gives without audience.

Jesus promises that the Father who sees in secret will reward us. This reward is not always material. Often, it is the reward of becoming more like Christ. It is the joy of knowing we have obeyed God. It is the peace that comes from giving without strings attached. It is the quiet satisfaction of partnering with God in His work on earth.

When we give without audience, we step into a deeper intimacy with God. We give for His eyes alone, and that transforms our hearts.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

·       What motives influence my giving—love for God or desire for recognition?

·       Where is God inviting me to give quietly, without drawing attention to myself?

·       How can I cultivate a lifestyle of hidden generosity that reflects the heart of Jesus?

PRAYER: Father, purify my motives and teach me to give with a hidden heart. Free me from the desire to be seen or praised. Let my generosity be an act of worship to You alone. May I give in secret, trusting that You see, You know, and You reward. Amen.
