GODLY DESIRES!
Psalm 37:4 AMPC
Delight yourself also in the
Lord, and He will give you the desires and secret petitions of your heart.
Desire is a powerful force
within every human being. It is the natural longing awakened by the thought or
experience of something good—something we hope to enjoy, obtain, or hold onto.
God created us with the ability to desire; physical desires, emotional desires,
mental desires, material desires, and most importantly, spiritual desires.
Desire itself is not sinful; it is a gift. But like every gift, it must be
directed toward the right things.
Desires can be healthy or
unhealthy, godly or ungodly, casual or intense. You may desire something
simple, like a warm cup of coffee, or something deeper, like meaningful
relationships, purpose, or spiritual growth. But desire can also become
dangerous when it is fixed on the wrong object—when it becomes a craving that
consumes us, like Samson’s desire for forbidden relationships or the
destructive pull of addictive substances. The issue is not desire itself, but
where we aim it.
God designed desire as a way
for us to express our hearts. When desire is pointed toward what is good,
right, and God‑honouring,
it becomes a source of strength and joy. Isaiah 26:8 captures this beautifully:
“O Lord, we love to do Your
will! Our hearts desire to glorify Your name.” This is the highest form of desire—to long for God Himself.
Scripture repeatedly calls
us to direct our desires toward God. Jeremiah 29:13 promises, “You will find Me
when you seek Me with all your heart.” Jesus echoes this in Matthew 6:33: “Seek
first the Kingdom of God… and all these things will be added to you.” When God
becomes our greatest desire, everything else finds its proper place.
Walking closely with God is
the surest way to cultivate godly desires. When we drift from Him, the soil of
our hearts becomes fertile ground for weeds—ungodly cravings, selfish
ambitions, and destructive passions. Deuteronomy 29:18 warns that when a person
turns away from God and begins to desire other gods, a poisonous root begins to
grow. Desire always plants something—either beauty or bitterness.
Your heart is a garden. What
grows there depends on what you feed, what you water, and where you dwell. When
you spend time in God’s presence, the desires that grow in you will be desires
of purity, purpose, and blessing. But when you distance yourself from Him,
unhealthy desires take root quickly and quietly.
Samson is a sobering
example. His “get her for me” attitude revealed a heart driven by impulse
rather than obedience. He wanted what he wanted, regardless of God’s law or his
parents’ counsel. Many times, the desires that feel the strongest are the ones that
lead us into the deepest trouble. Judges 14:3 shows how Samson’s desires pulled
him away from God’s plan.
Solomon’s story teaches
another lesson. In 1 Kings 3:5, God revealed that He knew the unspoken desires
of Solomon’s heart—even before Solomon voiced them. God sees the desires we
hide from others and even from ourselves. But Solomon’s later years show how
desires can shift. The same man who once desired wisdom eventually desired
pleasure, power, and foreign alliances, leading to his downfall in 1 Kings
11:1–13. Desire can elevate us—or destroy us.
Yet desire began with God
Himself. Out of His desire for relationship, He created humanity. Out of His
desire for our joy, He filled the world with beauty, diversity, and abundance.
Out of His desire to care for us, He provided food, shelter, and resources. Out
of His desire to teach us love, He created marriage and family. And out of His
desire to save us, He sent Jesus Christ to redeem us.
Desire is one of God’s most
wonderful gifts because it fuels passion, purpose, and pursuit. When God
inspires a desire in your heart—whether for ministry, service, growth, or
obedience—He also supplies the strength to fulfil it. But the motive must be right.
Anything we do for God must be done with pure desire, not pride, pressure, or
performance.
As you allow God into every
area of your life, He reshapes your desires to reflect His. Psalm 37:4
promises, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of
your heart.” This does not mean God gives us everything we want; it means He places
the right desires within us and then fulfils them.
Be persistent in pursuing
godly desires. Keep them burning in God’s presence. As you delight in Him, He
will align your heart with His and bring to pass the desires He has planted
within you.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
What desires currently
occupy my heart, and how do they align with God’s will and purpose for my
life?
In what areas do I need to
spend more intentional time in God’s presence so He can reshape my
desires?
How have my past
desires—godly or ungodly—shaped my spiritual journey, and what is God calling
me to desire now?
PRAYER: Thank You, Lord, for
placing desires within me. Help me to be led by Your Spirit so that every
desire I express brings glory to You. Shape my heart, purify my motives, and
make Your will my greatest longing. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
