GODLY STANDARD!
Isaiah 49:22 AMPC
Thus says the Lord God:
Behold, I will lift up My hand to the Gentile nations and set up My standard
and raise high My signal banner to the peoples; and they will bring your sons
in the bosom of their garments, and your daughters will be carried upon their
shoulders.
Looking at the nations of
the world and individual societies today, it would be forgiven for one to think
that the standards of old and those set by God are obsolete. But do Godly
standards, and values really get old? In Luke 6:45, Jesus makes us understand
that our actions become our value system, how we act and behave shows what we
believe.
Whose and what standards do
you live by? Yours, society or God’s?
Are you expressing and
exhibiting godly values and standards in your behaviour?
God's standards are not the
same as the worlds, and Christians should know that. Jesus said in John
15:18-20 that we are in the world, but we do not belong in this world. God said
in Leviticus 11:44, that we should "be holy because He is holy", but
that’s not what we see in the world now, is it? Even among Christian. The goalpost for godly standards and values
seems to be moving daily in all spheres of society including, sadly within the
church. So many, including Christians are trying to or have conformed to the
world's standards, and its disobedience to God's command to "Come out from
the world and be separated as declared in 2 Corinthians 6:17.
While Romans 12:2 tells us
not to conform to the pattern of this world but to be transformed by the
renewing of our minds. Unfortunately, it
seems everyone is conforming to the world’s standards. We must be intentional
in what we believe, accept and act upon, looking at the story of Joseph in
Genesis 39:8-9, we see clearly that we are meant to refuse to give in to
anything that falls short of God’s standard.
What do you base your
standard on? What beliefs do you act on? Like Joseph, would we dare to see the
wrongs and sin in our society as going again God or do we just go with the
flow? If we allow the flesh to lead us, it will lead us into corruption as Galatians
6:8 puts it but depending on the spirit to fill and lead us, allows us to
express the fruit of the spirit that helps us overcome conformation.
Micah 6:8 says God already
told us what to do, how and when but do we? No! we easily, for personal,
financial, political and any other reason, chose to go against the standards of
God for our benefit. It is very important
to live consistent moral lives according to Psalm 24:3-4, we all have the right
to worship and live our lives according to God’s standard but unfortunately,
not everyone will enjoy the status of righteousness. God expects us to show by
our behaviour that we truly are His people. There are so many in our society
today promoting the right standards, but worldly customs, traditions, cultures
and behaviours are not the same as God's no matter how "good,"
"healthy" and "clean" they may seem. We need to choose to pursue
God's standards more than we would choose to follow Oprah, psychology, or even
those seemingly harmless family standards.
God sets the standard—people
don’t. God Himself says, “I will set up My standard.” A standard in Scripture
refers to: A divine banner. A set expectation. A model for behaviour,
righteousness, and conduct. A marker for alignment under God’s authority.
God’s standard is a call to
alignment. A raised standard (banner) is an invitation to “Come under My way.” “Walk
in My truth.” And “Follow My order and righteousness.”
God lifts His hand to the
nations—meaning His standard is public, visible, and non-negotiable.
The Lord, through His word,
can transform us into new people by changing the way we think. We need to have
a changed mind, one that knows how God thinks through soaking itself in the
Word of God and not allowing any worldly views and standards to take that of
God. Godly standards don’t change and can never be obsolete.
RELECTION QUESTIONS
· In
what areas of my life have I unintentionally begun to conform to worldly
standards instead of God’s standards?
· How
can I, like Joseph, intentionally stand firm in righteousness even when
compromise seems easier or more acceptable?
· What
practical steps can I take daily to renew my mind through God’s Word so that my
values and actions consistently reflect His will?
PRAYER: Dear Lord, help me
in a world riddled with so much confusion and views to hold on to Godly
standards and values in Jesus’ name. Amen.
