HUMBLED AND LIFTED!
James 4:10 TLB
Then when you realize your
worthlessness before the Lord, he will lift you up, encourage and help you.
The posture that brings
God’s power is humility! Humility is not weakness; it is the posture that makes
room for God’s strength. James captures this mystery in one simple command:
“Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will lift you up.” Humility is not
something God forces on us—it is something we choose. And when we choose it,
God responds with elevation, honour, and grace.
Throughout Scripture, God
consistently draws near to the humble. Psalm 34:18 says He is “close to the broken-hearted.”
Isaiah 57:15 reveals that the High and Exalted One dwells with the contrite.
Jesus Himself teaches that “whoever humbles himself will be exalted” in Matthew
23:12. The pattern is clear: our lowering becomes God’s lifting.
But humility is not merely
an attitude; it is a way of living. It is the willingness to surrender our
pride, our self‑reliance,
and our need to control outcomes. It is choosing God’s way over our own, even
when His way feels slower, quieter, or hidden. And it is trusting that God sees
what others overlook and rewards what others ignore.
The God who lifts the lowly
according to Psalm 113:7 will only lift those He sees are totally humbled. One
of the clearest biblical pictures of humility leading to elevation is found in
the life of Hannah. In 1 Samuel 1, she pours out her soul before the Lord—no pretence,
no performance, just raw honesty and deep surrender. She calls herself God’s
“servant,” acknowledging her dependence on Him. God responds by giving her
Samuel, a prophet who would shape the destiny of a nation. Hannah’s humility
became the doorway to her lifting.
Another example is Joseph.
Betrayed, enslaved, and imprisoned, Joseph could have hardened his heart.
Instead, he remained faithful, refusing bitterness and trusting God’s unseen
hand. Genesis 39 repeatedly says, “The Lord was with Joseph.” And in Genesis
41, God lifts him from the prison to the palace in a single day. Joseph’s
humility in hidden places prepared him for honour in public places.
Then there is Jesus—the
ultimate example. Philippians 2:6–9 tells us that although He was equal with
God, He “made Himself nothing,” taking the form of a servant. He humbled
Himself to death on a cross. And because of this, “God exalted Him to the
highest place.” The greatest lifting in history came through the greatest
humility ever displayed.
What does humility look like
in everyday life?
Humility is not thinking
less of yourself; it is thinking of yourself less. It is choosing God’s will
over your own, even when your own seems easier. It is listening more than
speaking, serving more than being seen, and obeying even when obedience costs you
something.
Sometimes humility looks
like apologizing first. It looks like letting go of the need to be right. It
looks like stepping back so someone else can shine.
Sometimes it looks like
admitting you need God’s help.
And sometimes humility is
simply acknowledging that you cannot lift yourself. Promotion, breakthrough,
and honour come from God alone as stated in Psalm 75:6–7. When you stop
striving to elevate yourself, you make room for God to elevate you in His
perfect timing, the lifting that only God can do.
God’s lifting is different
from human promotion. Human lifting is fragile, temporary, and often based on
performance. God’s lifting is rooted in His love, His purpose, and His timing.
When God lifts you, no one can push you down. When God opens a door, no one can
shut it. When God honours you, no one can dishonour you.
What being lifted by God may
look like: Strength in a season that should have broken you. Peace in a
situation that should have overwhelmed you. Favour you didn’t earn, Opportunities
you didn’t seek. Restoration you couldn’t manufacture and influence that flows
from character, not ambition.
Humility positions you for
this kind of lifting. It aligns your heart with God’s heart and your pace with
God’s pace. It frees you from striving and anchors you in trust. And it reminds
you that the God who lifts is also the God who sees.

PRAYER: Father, teach me the
beauty of humility. Help me to bow low before You with a willing heart,
trusting that Your lifting is better than anything I could achieve on my own.
Remove pride, hurry, and self‑reliance
from my spirit. Make me gentle, surrendered, and attentive to Your voice. And
in Your perfect time, lift me in the way that brings You glory in Jesus name.
Amen.
