INTERNAL, EXTERNAL, AND ETERNAL HAPPINESS!
Psalm 1:1-6 TLB
Oh, the joys of those who do
not follow evil men's advice, who do not hang around with sinners, scoffing at
the things of God. [2] But they delight in doing everything God wants them to,
and day and night are always meditating on his laws and thinking about ways to
follow him more closely. [3] They are like trees along a riverbank bearing
luscious fruit each season without fail. Their leaves shall never wither, and
all they do shall prosper. [4] But for sinners, what a different story! They
blow away like chaff before the wind. [5] They are not safe on Judgment Day;
they shall not stand among the godly. [6] For the Lord watches over all the
plans and paths of godly men, but the paths of the godless lead to doom.
This Scripture is what real
happiness looks like. Verse 2 describes the blessed person as one who delights
in the law of the Lord and meditates day and night.
See the three‑fold pattern of happiness? Internal,
external, and eternal flowing
from a life that’s
deeply rooted in God’s
Word.
Internal happiness is heart anchored
in God. Internal happiness is that deep, steady joy that lives inside, even
when life on the outside is unsettled. It doesn’t depend on how things are
going, what we’ve achieved, or what people think of us. This kind of joy grows
out of delighting in God’s Word.
Delight is something that
happens in the heart. It’s an inner posture—a soul that finds pleasure,
comfort, and identity in what God has said.
In Luke 10:38‑42, Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, simply listening to
Him, while Martha is pulled in every direction pressing on her, but Mary choose
what brings inner joy—being
with Christ and hearing His Word.
Jesus commends her choice
and says it “will not be taken away from her.” That’s internal happiness:
choosing presence over pressure, devotion over distraction.
When God’s Word becomes our
delight, it quietly shapes how we think, steadies our emotions, and strengthens
us on the inside. This is why Paul could write, “Though outwardly we are
wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day” in 2 Corinthians
4:16.
Internal happiness is God
renewing the fruit of a heart.
External happiness is life that
flourishes outwardly. Verse 3 say: “He is like a tree planted by streams of
water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.” This is
a picture of external happiness—what others can see. It’s not about having more
money, status, or comfort. It’s a life that bears fruit, blesses people around
it, and stands firm when the wind picks up.
Joseph in Genesis 39-41 is
an example, even when sold into slavery and later thrown into prison, Scripture
keeps repeating: “The
Lord was with Joseph, and he prospered.”
His
inner trust in God led to visible favour, wisdom, and fruitfulness. Joseph’s
life brought blessing to Potiphar’s household, to the prison he was confined
in, and eventually to an entire nation.
External happiness grows out
of internal alignment with God. When the heart is planted in the Word, our
actions begin to change. Our hands are moved toward good works, our words start
to carry life instead of harm, and our whole life slowly becomes a witness to
God’s goodness.
Jesus said, “A good tree
cannot bear bad fruit” in Matthew 7:18. Healthy fruit on the outside is a sign
of health on the inside.
Eternal happiness is the joy
that outlives time. Our text ends in verse 6 with a serious contrast: “For the
Lord watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will
perish.” Eternal happiness is the final and fullest blessing—God’s favour, presence,
and reward stretching beyond this life. It’s the deep assurance that our joy
doesn’t stop at the grave.
In Luke 23:39‑43, the repentant thief
encounters eternal happiness at the very edge of his life. He has no chance to
go back, clean up his record, or build a new story of good works. All he can do
is turn to Jesus and ask for mercy.
Jesus answers, “Today you
will be with me in paradise.” Eternal happiness isn’t earned by a perfect
record; it’s given through a true relationship with Christ.
Eternal happiness gives
weight and meaning to both internal and external happiness. Without eternity,
even our best joys are fragile and temporary. With eternity in view, though,
even our hardest seasons gain purpose.
Paul writes in Romans 8:18,
“Our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be
revealed in us.” That future glory reshapes how we see today’s pain.
Eternal happiness comes as
we keep walking in His ways, all the way to the end.
The world keeps chasing
happiness through possessions, milestones, and experiences. Scripture turns
that pattern upside down. It shows us that lasting happiness doesn’t start from
the outside and work its way in; it starts inside the heart and moves outward—and
finally upward toward eternity with God.
As we meditate on God’s
Word, we become like the trees planted, nourished, fruitful, and resilient. Our
joy becomes less shaky, our lives carry more quiet impact, and our eternity
rests secure in Christ.
