MIRROR! MIRROR OF THE WORD!
2 Corinthians 3:18 AMPC
And all of us, as with
unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a
mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfigured into His very
own image in ever increasing splendor and from one degree of glory to another;
[for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit.
Mirrors! You either love and
have them or you don’t!
Every home has a mirror,
what’s more, everywhere you look nowadays, there’s a mirror staring at you- the
vanity of man propels us to want to check and double-check our appearances, touch-up
make-up and generally admire ourselves every minute. But a mirror is nothing
but a shadow of a reflection because it only sees and shows the outer, physical
person.
Mirror, mirror, on the wall,
who is fairest of all? Hundreds of “Mirror, mirror” exist in our culture today
because of the original story or translation; in the 1937 Disney classic, Snow
White and the Seven Dwarfs. The Evil Queen says this famous line “Magic mirror,
on the wall – who is the fairest one of all?” She used her magic wall mirror to
try to locate and measure the fairest (most beautiful) lady in the kingdom just
to eliminate her.
We use mirrors to fix
physical imperfections in our appearances like messed up hair, and smudged
make-up, but the mirror itself doesn’t fix us, only shows what needs fixing.
Here’s the thing about God’s
mirror, though, it always tells the truth, even if we don’t like what we see!
God’s Word, the Bible, is the only reliable mirror that tells us truthfully
what we are like before God. Physical mirrors may flatter us, but God’s mirror
tells it like it is! So, anyone who turns then to God has the freedom in the
spirit, to receive something Mose never knew or had, as we become more like
Christ, reflecting the glory of God according to John 4:4.
A broken, distorted or dirty
mirror doesn’t work properly and is ineffective in showing us the right image,
even though, mirrors can’t tell what’s inside. Like the world, a mirror doesn’t
have a clear view of right and wrong. Our view is blurry, distorted, and incapable
of revealing what is real or half or full truth as seen in 1 Corinthians 13:12.
The mirror is only good for showing and highlighting our imperfections.
Mirror! Mirror! On the wall
who is the best of them all is what we do when we look in our mirrors. We look
at ourselves and decide we are our standard, so we measure everyone, including
ourselves based on our performance. What we really should be saying is:
"Mirror! Mirror! of God's word, show me who I am meant to be. Humanity is
progressive, we learn new things daily. Psychologists quote learning as "a
relatively permanent change in behaviour that occurs as a result of
experience.” But permanent change can only be found in Christ.
James 1:23 means that those
who don’t do God’s word will forget what their natural faces look like after
staring intently at it in the mirror, "the countenance of his birth":
the face he was born with. As we may behold our natural faces in a mirror, so
the hearer may perceive their moral countenance in God's Word. We can't become supernatural begins by using
natural abilities and doing unscriptural things. We must study God’s word as
intently as we use the mirror, implying that an intensive study of the Word of
God holds our inner man up to the mirror of God that reveals our cracks and
imperfections according to 2 Timothy 2:15. A forgetful hearer is someone who
sees themselves in God’s mirror, but then goes away and does nothing about it
as James 1:24 puts it. The Bible is unlike any other mirror because it can
change us! God's mirror can make us beautiful outside but more so on the
inside! Mirror! Mirror on the wall or Mirror! Mirror of God’s word! Which is
better, which do you prefer? Allow the
word of God to unveil your face to receive all the benefits of the new
covenant.
REFLECTION QUESTION
· What
areas of my life does the mirror of God’s Word reveal that need transformation,
and how willing am I to surrender them to the Holy Spirit?
· In
what ways have I been relying on natural “mirrors” such as self‑perception, culture, or
performance instead of allowing God’s
Word to define my true identity?
· How
can I become a consistent doer of the Word, not a forgetful hearer, so that
true and lasting change takes place within me?
PRAYER: Lord, help me humbly
and earnestly gaze at the mirror of your word and be daily transformed through
the reflection of your Spirit in Jesus’ name. Amen.
