PIDGIN MEMORIAL STONES!
Genesis 28:18 “ Very early for di next morning, Jakob take di stone wey e put near en head kon keep am as holy stone. Den e pour oil on-top am”
For Bible, God dey always
teach Him people di holy discipline of remembering. E know say human heart dey
quick forget, how yesterday miracle fit disappear for our mind because of today
pressure. Na why God dey always call Him people make dem pause, think back, and
mark di moments wey Him hand show clear for their life. One clear picture of
this thing dey for Joshua 4, when Israel finally cross Jordan River enter di
land wey God promise dem.
Di crossing na pure miracle.
Di water stand still, ground wey suppose soft turn dry, and whole nation waka
pass on top place wey no suppose fit hold person. After dis supernatural
moment, God tell Joshua make e collect twelve stones from where di priests
stand with di ark. Dem suppose arrange di stones as memorial, so that when
future generations ask wetīn the stones mean? di people go fit tell story of
God power and faithfulness. Dis stones no be decoration; na declaration. Dem
dey say di same God wey bring Israel commot from Egypt na Him still carry dem
enter promise.
We see similar thing for 1
Samuel 7:12. After God deliver Israel from di Philistines, Samuel raise one
stone, come call am Ebenezer—“stone of help”—e come say, “So far, na di Lord
help us.” Na holy recognition be that, spiritual marker wey dey say, “Na only
because God carry us we dey here.” Memorial stones no ever be about di stones
themselves; na about di story dem dey keep.
Dis pattern of remembrance
start from long time. For Genesis 28, Jacob meet God for dream for Bethel. As
him see how God presence heavy for there, e carry di stone wey e use as pillow,
stand am like pillar, and pour oil on top. Dat stone turn memorial of
encounter—physical reminder say God don talk, promise, and reveal Himself.
Later for Deuteronomy 27, God tell Israel make dem set up big stones, cover dem
with plaster, and write Him law on top. Dose stones na covenant reminder, dey
call di people to remember who dem be and who dem belong to.
Psalm dem still carry dis
same heartbeat. Psalm 103:2 say, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all
His benefits.” To forget no be small thing; na spiritual danger. When we forget
wetin God don do, we dey lose sight of who Him be. Psalm 78 remind us say
remembrance no be only personal—e dey generational. “We go tell next generation
di wonderful works of the Lord,” so that “dem go set their hope for God.”
Memorial stones no be private trophy; dem be shared testimony wey dey
strengthen faith of people wey dey come after us.
Today, even though we no dey
gather physical stones, di principle still strong for our life. God still dey
call us to remember. Our own memorial stones fit be journal wey full with
answered prayers, dates we write for Bible margin, songs wey come out from
seasons of breakthrough, or family traditions wey dey repeat God goodness. E
fit be quiet place where we don meet God, or testimonies wey we purposely share
with our children. Wetin matter no be di form but di intentional heart. When we
pause to remember, gratitude go rise, fear go lose grip, and faith go come
steady again.
Memorial stones dey remind
us say di God wey part Jordan na di same God wey still dey make way today. Di
God wey help Samuel na di same God wey don help us “reach here so.” Di God wey
meet Jacob for wilderness na di same God wey dey meet us for unexpected places.
Di God wey write Him law for stone now dey write Him truth for our hearts. And
last‑last, every memorial stone
dey point to di greatest act of God faithfulness: di cross. Jesus na our
eternal reminder say God dey save, God dey love, and God dey keep promise.
Every time we break bread and drink di cup, we dey join for di highest act of remembrance—“Do
this in remembrance of Me.”
