QUALIFIED BY GRACE, NOT BY STRENGTH!
1 Corinthians 1:25-31 Voice
You can count on this: God's
foolishness will always be wiser than mere human wisdom, and God's weakness
will always be stronger than mere human strength. [26] Look carefully at your
call, brothers and sisters. By human standards, not many of you are deemed to
be wise. Not many are considered powerful. Not many of you come from royalty,
right? [27] But celebrate this: God selected the world's foolish to bring shame
upon those who think they are wise; likewise, He selected the world's weak to
bring disgrace upon those who think they are strong. [28] God selected the
common and the castoff, whatever lacks status, so He could invalidate the
claims of those who think those things are significant. [29] So it makes no
sense for any person to boast in God's presence. [30] Instead, credit God with
your new situation: you are united with Jesus the Anointed. He is God's wisdom
for us and more. He is our righteousness and holiness and redemption. [31] As
the Scripture says: "If someone wants to boast, he should boast in the
Lord."
God does not call the
qualified—He qualifies the called. His wisdom surpasses human understanding,
and His power is made perfect in our weakness. “The foolishness of God is wiser
than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.”
Before we disqualify
ourselves with statements like “I am too young, too old, too weak, too
uneducated, or too ordinary,” God invites us to look at the scriptures and see
how He intentionally uses what the world calls weak to display His glory.
Examples of “Weak” People
and things God used:
A left‑handed man — Ehud in Judges 3:15.
An ox goad — Shamgar’s
simple tool became a weapon in Judges 3:31.
A woman — Deborah, a
prophetess and judge in Judges 4:4–9.
A tent peg — Jael’s
inanimate tool for deliverance in Judges 4:21.
A donkey — God opened its
mouth to speak in Numbers 22:28–31.
A fish — Delivered a coin
for tax in Matthew 17:27.
A stone — Used by David
against Goliath in 1 Samuel 17:49.
The jawbone of a donkey —
Samson’s unconventional weapon in Judges 15:16.
A song and confusion —
Gideon’s victory by worship and obedience in Judges 7:19–22.
These examples remind us
that God does not need human strength, sophistication, credentials, or
perfection to accomplish His purposes. It is the Holy Spirit who enables us.
We often assume that our
ability, training, or experience entitles us to serve God. But Scripture
teaches that our sufficiency is from Him: “I can do all things through Christ
who strengthens me “declares Philippians 4:13. “Not by might nor by power, but
by My Spirit, says the Lord” declares Zechariah 4:6 and “Our adequacy is from
God” according to 2 Corinthians 3:5.
God choses by purpose, not
performance!
God does not choose based on
age, status, tribe, gender, or background. He chooses according to His will and
purpose: as John 15:16 says “You did not choose Me, but I chose you.” Romans
8:29 says “Those He foreknew He predestined to be conformed to the image of His
Son.” And 1 Samuel 16:7 says, “Man looks at the outward appearance, but the
Lord looks at the heart.”
We cannot earn or work our
way into God’s grace—He freely calls, equips, and empowers us. But only the
humble! The Lord uses and elevates those who surrender according to 1 Peter 5:6
and Isaiah 64:8.
God delights in transforming
weak vessels into instruments of power for His glory.
Will you surrender?
Every weak person or thing
God used had one thing in common—they yielded to Him. A fish, a donkey, a
stone, a peg—they carried no pride and offered no resistance. God could use
them because they were available.
How much more can He do with
a willing believer? “His strength is made perfect in weakness.” Declares 2
Corinthians 12:9.
“God has chosen the foolish
things… that no flesh should glory in His presence.” According to 1 Corinthians
1:27–29.
Believers are considered
foolish by the world, but God sees treasure. He transforms ordinary people into
extraordinary instruments.
God is looking for
availability, not ability—willingness, not perfection.
Start where you are, with
what you have.
He will take you where He
wants you to be.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
• In what areas of your life have you been disqualifying
yourself, and what might God be asking you to surrender?
• Which biblical example of a “weak thing” speaks most to you,
and why?
• How can you rely more on the Holy Spirit’s power rather than
your own strength or qualifications?
PRAYER: Father, I thank You
that I am qualified by Your grace and not by my human strength. Take my
weaknesses and use them for Your glory. Shape me into a vessel of honour,
willing, surrendered, and yielded to Your Spirit. Empower me to walk boldly in
the calling You have placed upon my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
