THE LAW OF PRIORITY!
2 Timothy 4:1-8 AMPC
I charge [you] in the
presence of God and of Christ Jesus, Who is to judge the living and the dead,
and by (in the light of) His coming and His kingdom: [2] Herald and preach the
Word! Keep your sense of urgency [stand by, be at hand and ready], whether the
opportunity seems to be favorable or unfavorable. [Whether it is convenient or
inconvenient, whether it is welcome or unwelcome, you as preacher of the Word
are to show people in what way their lives are wrong.] And convince them,
rebuking and correcting, warning and urging and encouraging them, being
unflagging and inexhaustible in patience and teaching. [3] For the time is
coming when [people] will not tolerate (endure) sound and wholesome
instruction, but, having ears itching [for something pleasing and gratifying],
they will gather to themselves one teacher after another to a considerable
number, chosen to satisfy their own liking and to foster the errors they hold,
[4] And will turn aside from hearing the truth and wander off into myths and
man-made fictions. [5] As for you, be calm and cool and steady, accept and
suffer unflinchingly every hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fully
perform all the duties of your ministry. [6] For I am already about to be
sacrificed [my life is about to be poured out as a drink offering]; the time of
my [spirit's] release [from the body] is at hand and I will soon go free. [7] I
have fought the good (worthy, honorable, and noble) fight, I have finished the
race, I have kept (firmly held) the faith. [8] [As to what remains] henceforth
there is laid up for me the [victor's] crown of righteousness [for being right
with God and doing right], which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to
me and recompense me on that [great] day-and not to me only, but also to all those
who have loved and yearned for and welcomed His appearing (His return).
The law of priority is the
spiritual principle that what you place first will shape everything else in
your life. Scripture consistently shows that order determines outcome and
nowhere is this clearer than in Paul’s final charge to Timothy. Paul writes
from a Roman prison, fully aware that his earthly assignment is almost
complete. Yet his focus is not on regret, fear, or self-preservation, but on the
gospel, the next generation, and the faithful completion of his calling. His
words reveal what it means to live with divine order—putting God’s purpose
above comfort, convenience, or personal ambition.
Paul begins with a solemn
charge: “I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus… preach the
word; be ready in season and out of season”. Priority begins with clarity.
Timothy is not left to guess what matters most. Paul places the Word of God at
the top of the list. In a world filled with shifting opinions, false teachings,
and cultural pressures, Timothy’s first responsibility is to anchor himself and
others in truth. This reflects Jesus’ own teaching in Matthew 6:33: to seek
first the kingdom of God and His righteousness... When the Word is first,
everything else finds its rightful place.
Paul then warns that a time
will come when people will not endure sound doctrine. This is a reminder that
priority must be intentional, not accidental. Drift happens when discipline is
absent. People naturally gravitate toward what is comfortable, not what is
true. The law of priority demands vigilance— “keep your head in all situations”.
Timothy must not be shaped by the desires of the crowd but by the assignment of
God. This echoes Joshua’s call: “Choose this day whom you will serve” in Joshua
24:15. Priority is a choice renewed daily.
Paul also highlights
endurance: “Endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfil your
ministry”. Priority is proven not in convenience but in consistency. Anyone can
be faithful when conditions are favourable. But those who live by divine
priority remain steady through hardship, opposition, and uncertainty. Paul
himself is the example—beaten, imprisoned, misunderstood, yet unwavering. His
life mirrors Jesus, who “set His face toward Jerusalem” seen in Luke 9:51,
prioritising the cross above comfort.
Then Paul shifts from
instruction to reflection: “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the
race, I have kept the faith”. These are the words of a man who lived with
ordered devotion. He fought the right battles—not petty conflicts, but
spiritual ones. He ran the race marked out for him—not someone else’s race. He
kept the faith—not merely believed, but guarded, lived, and transmitted it.
Priority produces legacy. When you put God first, your life becomes a testimony
that outlives you.
Finally, Paul looks forward:
“There is laid up for me the crown of righteousness…” verse 8. Priority always
leads to reward. God honours those who honour Him according to 1 Samuel 2:30.
The crown is not just for Paul but “for all who have loved His appearing.” In
other words, for all who live with eternity in view. When eternity is your
priority, earthly distractions lose their power. You serve with joy, give with
freedom, endure with hope, and finish with confidence.
Biblical examples reinforce
this law. Abraham prioritised obedience over understanding when he left his
homeland in Genesis 12:1–4. Daniel prioritised prayer over political safety in Daniel
6:10. Jesus Himself modelled perfect priority: “My food is to do the will of
Him who sent Me” according to John 4:34. Each of these lives demonstrates that
when God is first, everything else aligns with His purpose.
The law of priority is not
about doing more but ordering rightly. It is not about perfection but
direction. It is the daily decision to place God’s Word, God’s will, and God’s
assignment above every competing voice. Like Paul, we are invited to live in such
a way that when our race is complete, we can say with confidence: “I have
finished well.”
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
· What
currently holds first place in your daily decisions, and how does it align with
God’s priorities for you?
· Which
“good fight” has God called you to focus on, and which battles do you need to
release?
· How
can you reorder your time, energy, or commitments this week to “fulfil your
ministry” more intentionally?
PRAYER: Lord, teach me to
live with Your priorities at the centre of my life. Align my heart with Your
Word, strengthen me to endure with faith, and help me finish the race You have
set before me. May my choices honour You, and may my life reflect Your kingdom.
Amen.
