AMBASSADORS OF CHRIST!
2 Corinthians 5:20 AMPC
So we are Christ's
ambassadors, God making His appeal as it were through us. We [as Christ's
personal representatives] beg you for His sake to lay hold of the divine favor
[now offered you] and be reconciled to God.
To be an ambassador is to be
a representative—someone who carries the authority, message, and character of
the one who sent them. When Paul declares, “We are therefore Christ’s
ambassadors, he is reminding believers that our lives are not our own. We are
carriers of the gospel, reflections of Christ, and visible expressions of the
invisible God. Yet, if we are honest, many Christians today have become poor
advertisements of the message of the cross. Instead of drawing people to
Christ, our attitudes, inconsistencies, and lack of integrity often push them
away.
Jesus Himself confronted
this problem in His day. His strongest rebukes were not directed at sinners
seeking mercy but at religious leaders who claimed to represent God while
misrepresenting His heart. In Matthew 23, He called the Pharisees “whitewashed tombs”—beautiful
on the outside but full of decay within. They loved titles, positions, and
public honour, but their hearts were far from God. They preached righteousness
but did not practice it. They imposed heavy burdens on others but excused
themselves. Their lives contradicted their message.
Sadly, this same spirit
still exists today. Some believers are quick to judge others while ignoring
their own faults. Some preach holiness but live carelessly. Some demand
standards from others that they themselves do not uphold. Others hide behind
spiritual language while lacking compassion, humility, or integrity. But an
ambassador cannot afford such contradictions. An ambassador who misrepresents
their nation is recalled. An ambassador who misrepresents Christ damages the
witness of the gospel.
Scripture gives us examples
of both faithful and unfaithful ambassadors. Jonah, for instance, was sent to
Nineveh as God’s messenger, but his heart resisted the assignment. Even after
preaching, he lacked compassion for the people God loved in Jonah 4:1–11. His
message was correct, but his attitude contradicted God’s heart. On the other
hand, Daniel served as a faithful ambassador in Babylon. Though surrounded by
idolatry and corruption, he maintained integrity, excellence, and devotion to
God. His life was so consistent that even his enemies could find no fault in
him except his commitment to prayer according to Daniel 6:4–10. Daniel’s life
preached louder than his words.
To be a true ambassador of
Christ, your life must align with your message. Your character must match your
confession. Your conduct must reflect your calling. People are watching—not to
judge you, but to see if Christ is real in you. Paul understood this when he
said, “Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ” in 1 Corinthians
11:1. He was not claiming perfection; he was demonstrating responsibility.
Ambassadors do not live for themselves. They live to reveal the One they
represent.
But how do we live this out?
The answer is simple: you cannot represent Christ without the Holy Spirit.
Jesus told His disciples, “Without Me you can do nothing” in John 15:5. You
cannot walk in integrity without His strength. You cannot love difficult people
without His grace. You cannot discern truth from error without His wisdom. You
cannot lead others if the Holy Spirit is not leading you. God invites you to
ask for what you lack— “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God”
declares James 1:5. He gives wisdom, knowledge, understanding, and discernment
to those who seek Him.
Being an ambassador of
Christ is not about perfection; it is about surrender. It is about allowing the
Holy Spirit to shape your character, purify your motives, and empower your
witness. It is about living in such a way that when people encounter you, they
encounter the fragrance of Christ (2 Corinthians 2:14–15). It is about
representing Jesus with humility, compassion, truth, and integrity.
May your life preach louder
than your words. May your conduct reflect the cross you proclaim. May you be a
vessel through whom God makes His appeal to the world.
