CHILD-FRIENDLY I WON’T HELP!

Judges 5:23 GNT

"Put a curse on Meroz," says the angel of the LORD, "a curse, a curse on those who live there. They did not come to help the LORD, come as soldiers to fight for him."

 

Sometimes the Bible shows us people who did great things for God. But sometimes it shows us people who did nothing—even when help was needed. That is what happened in Judges 5:23.

In this story, God gave His people a big victory. Deborah and Barak sang a song to thank God. They also mentioned a place called Meroz. The people of Meroz did not do anything wrong like lying or stealing. Their mistake was this: they refused to help. They stayed quiet. They stayed comfortable. They stayed away.

God noticed.

Meroz had the chance to help. They were close to the battle. They could have shown up. But they didn’t. Their “I won’t help” was not spoken out loud, but heaven heard it.

Other people did help: Zebulun and Naphtali risked their lives. 

Jael, an ordinary woman, obeyed God bravely. 

God loves when we show up—even if we feel small. Jesus taught the same thing in the story of the Good Samaritan. Two important people walked past a hurting man. But the Samaritan stopped and helped. God celebrates people who care.

Today, we act like Meroz when we say: “I’m too busy.”  “It’s not my job.”  “Someone else will do it.” 

But God wants us to be ready to help, love, give, pray, and serve. When we say “yes,” we get to be part of God’s story.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

·       Is there someone I could help right now? 

·       What stops me from helping others? 

·       How can I be quicker to say “yes” when God needs me?

PRAYER: Lord, help me to have a willing heart. Take away fear, excuses, and laziness. Teach me to notice people who need help and to act with courage and kindness. May I always show up for You. Amen.
