CHILD-FRIENDLY PAID MANIPULATOR!

Numbers 22–23

 

The story of Balaam and Balak shows what happens when someone uses their gift from God for the wrong reasons. Balaam was a prophet, but his heart was tempted by money and honour. King Balak was afraid of Israel, so he wanted Balaam to come and curse them. Instead of asking God for help, Balak tried to buy spiritual power.

Balaam knew God had already said, “Do not go with them. You cannot curse the people, for they are blessed” (Numbers 22:12). But when Balak sent more important people and promised more rewards, Balaam became tempted. His heart wanted the gifts and honour more than God’s will.

Balak tried the same tricks manipulators use today: Flattery — sending important princes. Money and rewards. Pressure — asking again and again.

Balaam pretended to be spiritual, but inside he wanted the reward. When he asked God again, hoping for a different answer, God let him go — but God was not pleased (Numbers 22:22).

On the journey, Balaam could not see the angel blocking the road, but his donkey could. God used the donkey to show Balaam that he was going the wrong way. This teaches us that when our hearts are not right, we stop seeing clearly.

Even though Balak tried hard to make Balaam curse Israel, he couldn’t. Every time Balaam opened his mouth, he blessed Israel instead (Numbers 23:8, 20). God showed that no one can change what He has blessed.

Sadly, Balaam never truly changed his heart. He later encouraged Balak to lead Israel into sin (Numbers 31:16), and he died among God’s enemies. His story warns us to choose obedience over greed.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

·       Am I tempted to do wrong just to get praise or rewards? 

·       How can I keep my heart focused on obeying God? 

·       What can I do to avoid people who try to pressure or manipulate me?

PRAYER: Lord, make my heart pure and my motives right. Help me follow Your truth and never be tempted to do wrong for rewards or approval. Keep me from manipulation and help me walk in obedience. Amen.
