COMPROMISE!
Deuteronomy 5:31-33 TLB
Then you come back and stand
here beside me, and I will give you all my commandments, and you shall teach
them to the people; and they will obey them in the land I am giving to
them.'" [32] So Moses told the people, "You must obey all the commandments
of the Lord your God, following his directions in every detail, going the whole
way he has laid out for you; [33] only then will you live long and prosperous
lives in the land you are to enter and possess.
Compromise means different
things to different people, and many see it as a matter of personal opinion.
But spiritually, compromise should never be based on individual interpretation.
The standard definition of compromise is an agreement where each side gives up
something to reach a settlement—often accepting a standard lower than what is
desirable. In everyday relationships, compromise helps us grow, adjust, and
live peaceably with others. But when it comes to spiritual matters, compromise
becomes dangerous. God’s way is straight, pure, and non‑negotiable. His truth cannot
be mixed with human ideas, cultural trends, or doctrines that contradict His
Word. To do so is to welcome something that does not align with the standards
of the Kingdom.
Daniel and his three friends
understood this clearly. In Daniel 1:8–14, they negotiated respectfully with
the Babylonian official concerning their diet. They were willing to compromise
on the method—ten days of testing—but not on the principle. They refused to mix
what God had taught them with the practices of Babylon. This shows us that
compromise is sometimes the art of negotiation so that both sides can progress,
but only when the core truth is not violated.
There is a time to
compromise, and there is a time to stand firm. In today’s society, many
“Christians” compromise their faith for trends, popularity, or acceptance.
People twist scriptures to suit personal desires, even though 2 Peter 1:20
warns that Scripture is not open to private interpretation. God’s Word is pure,
uncontaminated, and unchangeable. When we compromise God’s truth—even
slightly—we open the door for the enemy to influence our beliefs. A little
concession becomes a big doorway. When evil wants her way, she only needs a
small crack. Giving a little often means giving all.
To compromise God’s Word,
God’s ways, or God’s standards is to negotiate away what is holy. To give up an
ounce of holiness to gain a pound of worldliness is not a bargain—it is a loss
with eternal consequences. The test of acceptable compromise is simple: Do both
sides ultimately win without violating God’s truth? Unacceptable compromise is
giving up too much to gain too little.
Hebrews 3:12–13 warns us to
stay alert, especially when surrounded by people who no longer see sin as sin.
When we stay in environments where wrong is normalized, we can easily find
ourselves agreeing to “small” things that seem harmless but are still sin.
Continued compromise in areas where God has called us to stand firm will
eventually dull our sensitivity to sin. A little sin now and then can grow into
a lifestyle defined by sin.
Many things that seem
acceptable or pleasurable are fleeting, as Hebrews 11:25 teaches. Moses refused
to compromise. Though raised in Pharaoh’s palace with access to wealth,
privilege, and influence according to Exodus 2:10, he chose to identify with
God’s people. He rejected temporary pleasures because he valued God’s eternal
reward. Moses teaches us that refusing to compromise may cost us comfort, but
it secures our destiny.
Can we do the same in a
world that rewards bad behaviour and punishes righteousness? A society that
pressures us to compromise on everything—even things that affect our eternity?
Like Daniel and his friends, we must stand respectfully but firmly for what is
right. We must refuse to accept worldly standards that fall below the Godly
standard set in Scripture.
Compromise is not only a bad
trade; sometimes it is the failure to act when we know what is right. Doing
nothing when God expects us to take a stand is another form of compromise.
Silence in the face of wrong is agreement. Passivity in the face of sin is
participation.
Do not compromise your
spiritual race. Walk in the path God has set before you. Stay aligned with His
Word. Stand firm in truth. And let your life reflect the holiness of the One
who called you.
