DON’T BE HINDERED!

Genesis 24:56 AMPC

But [the servant] said to them, Do not hinder and delay me, seeing that the Lord has caused me to go prosperously on my way. Send me away, that I may go to my master.

To hinder means to make progress difficult, to obstruct movement, or to place an obstacle in someone’s path that causes delay, frustration, or stumbling. Jesus used this word when He corrected His disciples in Luke 18:15–16, telling them not to hinder the children from coming to Him. In essence, He said, “Do not block, delay, or interfere with their access to Me because of your own reasoning or opinions.”

Sadly, many believers today experience hindrance in similar ways. People are delayed, discouraged, or stopped from fulfilling what God has placed in their hearts because of someone else’s influence, expectations, or interference. At other times, the hindrance comes from within—feelings of inadequacy, fear, unpreparedness, or a sense of being unqualified can stop us from stepping into what God has already empowered us to do.

So, the question becomes: What is hindering you from following the Lord fully?

Are you experiencing delays in certain areas of your life?

Have you allowed someone’s voice or attitude to slow you down?

In Numbers 22:16, Balak urged Balaam not to let anything hinder him from coming to curse Israel. Balak used urgency and pressure as tools of manipulation. This reminds us that hindrance is not always accidental—sometimes it is intentional, strategic, and spiritually motivated.

Is something or someone hindering you from serving God wholeheartedly?

Have life’s pressures, distractions, or carnal pursuits become obstacles in your spiritual race?

Are you, like Balaam, lingering in places or relationships that delay your obedience?

In Genesis 24, Abraham’s servant completed his assignment of finding a wife for Isaac. Once Rebekah agreed to go with him, he saw no reason to remain in Laban’s house. But Laban, driven by personal gain, attempted to delay him. The servant, however, was spiritually alert and refused to be hindered. He understood timing, purpose, and obedience.

Jesus warned His disciples in John 16:1 so they would not stumble. Hindrance occurs when we drift from the path of righteousness, as Romans 16:17 cautions. To avoid being hindered, we must know where we stand spiritually and remain sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s leading.

The enemy constantly places roadblocks in our path—discouragement, distractions, temptations, unhealthy relationships, fear, and even opportunities that look good but are not God. Hebrews 12:1 instructs us to lay aside every weight and the sin that entangles us. This means holding tightly to our relationship with God and refusing to allow anything to slow our spiritual progress.

Sometimes hindrance is subtle. Colossians 3:5 warns us about idols—things like money, fame, relationships, or desires that quietly take God’s place in our hearts. Anything that competes with God becomes a hindrance.

Abraham understood this well. When the Hittites offered him land for free as a burial site, he refused. Though it looked like a blessing, he discerned it as a potential hindrance. Some “free gifts” come with hidden costs. Some opportunities are traps. Some open doors are distractions. We must weigh the cost of every decision, so we do not become entangled in things that delay our destiny.

Like Abraham’s servant, we must know when our assignment is complete and when it is time to move on. Staying longer than God intends can become a hindrance. Remaining in relationships, environments, or mindsets that God has released us from can delay our progress and drain our spiritual strength.

Beloved, do not be hindered. Do not allow fear, people, circumstances, or the enemy’s strategies to stop you. Move forward with clarity, courage, and conviction. When God says go, do not linger. When God says release, do not hold on. When God says rise, do not remain seated.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

What internal or external hindrances have I allowed to delay my obedience to God?

Which relationships, habits, or mindsets do I need to release so I can move forward freely?

How can I strengthen my spiritual sensitivity to recognise hindrances early and avoid them?

PRAYER: Lord, thank You that I can depend on You to lead me in the right path. Remove every hindrance from my life and give me the strength, wisdom, and courage to follow You without delay. Keep me focused, steadfast, and obedient so that nothing stops me from serving You fully. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
