GODLY UNDERSTANDING!
1 Kings 4:29 TLB
God gave Solomon great
wisdom and understanding, and a mind with broad interests.
The Hebrew word for wisdom (ḥokmâ) means skill—the God-given ability
to live according to His divine patterns, principles, and purposes. Wisdom is
therefore the right and righteous use of knowledge. But how does one receive
understanding?
In Scripture, understanding
carries several shades of meaning, but its core expressions are intelligence,
discernment, rational ability, and skilfulness. When God endowed Solomon with
wisdom, He also poured into him a deep reservoir of godly understanding—a
capacious, expansive mind filled with supernatural assistance to comprehend,
retain, organize, and communicate truth.
Understanding is the power
of the mind to perceive, to distinguish truth from falsehood, and to grasp
divine realities. According to Job 32:8, true understanding does not originate
from human intellect alone; it is the breath of the Almighty that gives discernment.
This means that even the most brilliant human mind cannot attain godly
understanding apart from the Spirit of the Lord.
Godly understanding is the
manifestation of supernatural wisdom bestowed upon those who seek it. James 1:5
assures us that God gives this wisdom freely, generously, and without reproach.
Yet, He gives it to the measure our spiritual capacity can receive—wisdom
tailored to our season, purpose, and divine assignment.
One of the primary pathways
to maintaining and growing in godly understanding is discipleship. Jesus made
it clear that understanding of the mysteries of the kingdom is given to His
disciples—those who follow, study, and obey Him, see Matthew 13:10–11, 51.
Every believer has access to the privilege of understanding, but deeper
mysteries are entrusted only to those who walk closely with Him and can steward
revelation with humility and responsibility.
Understanding is not merely
the accumulation of knowledge; it is the ability to evaluate, interpret,
organize, and apply truth. Psalm 111:10 teaches us that wisdom and
understanding are inseparably linked to our character and conduct. In other
words, godly understanding produces a transformed life.
The Spirit of
Understanding—one of the seven Spirits of God—opens the Scriptures to us,
illuminating truth so that we can apply it practically. 1 John 2:20 reminds us
that believers have an “unction” or anointing from the Holy One, enabling us to
know all things necessary for life and godliness. Without the Holy Spirit,
knowledge remains intellectual; but with Him, understanding becomes revelation.
We often admire the depth of
comprehension some people possess—even unbelievers—yet Scripture is clear: all
true understanding originates from God. Solomon received more than he requested
because God gives according to purpose, not preference. He distributes
understanding with precision—never too little, never too much. He supplies
exactly what is required for the assignments, locations, and seasons He has
ordained.
We also see examples like
Bezaleel in Exodus 31:3, whom God filled with His Spirit and granted
extraordinary wisdom, skills, creativity, intelligence, and understanding. His
craftsmanship exceeded the limitations of his age and training because it was
divinely empowered.
Psalm 119:99 shows us that
meditating on the Word of God increases understanding to a level that surpasses
even our teachers. Meditation invites revelation, and revelation produces
transformation.
Ultimately, godly
understanding is God’s supernatural revelation—His secret insights into His
Word and His ways. The Holy Spirit turns on the light within us, enabling us to
perceive spiritual truths clearly. No matter how much natural understanding a
person possesses, he cannot know God’s will without the Holy Spirit’s
illumination.
Carnal understanding may
help us grasp information, but it cannot transform the heart. Godly
understanding, however, converts truth into life lessons, shapes character, and
aligns us with God’s will. It lifts us into the realm of the Spirit where we
can truly discern what God is saying and doing.
May we continually seek this
divine understanding, for it is the key to walking in spiritual maturity,
discernment, and divine purpose.
