I WON’T HELP!
Judges 5:23 AMPC
Curse Meroz, said the
messenger of the Lord. Curse bitterly its inhabitants, because they came not to
the help of the Lord, to the help of the Lord against the mighty!
I won't help! Not I can’t or
might but an emphatic no to offering help to those in need.
Everyone is remembered for
something. For what are you remembered? Hopefully, not "nothing" like
these people.
Judges 5:23 records one of
the most sobering rebukes in Scripture: “Curse Meroz.” Cursed for doing
nothing!
This verse appears in the
victory song of Deborah and Barak after God delivered Israel from Sisera. While
the chapter celebrates courage, obedience, and partnership with God, it also
highlights a painful contrast—a people who refused to help.
Meroz is not remembered for
idolatry, immorality, or rebellion. They are remembered for doing nothing.
Their sin was silence. Their failure was passivity. Their legacy was absence.
What is your sin? Your legacy?
There is a heavy weight of
withholding help in society right now.
The angel of the Lord
Himself pronounced the curse. This shows that refusing to help in God’s work is
not a small matter. In Scripture, God often rebukes not only wrong actions but
also the absence of right actions.
James 4:17 says, “If anyone
knows the good, they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin.”
Proverbs 3:27 warns, “Do not
withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to act.”
Do we? Do you?
Meroz had the ability to
help. They had proximity. They had opportunity. But they chose comfort over
courage, neutrality over responsibility, and safety over sacrifice.
Their “I won’t help” was not
spoken aloud, but it was heard in heaven.
It's only God option,
nothing else because God notices who shows up.
Judges 5 contrasts Meroz
with tribes who willingly risked their lives to help:
Zebulun “risked their lives
to the death” (Judges 5:18).
Naphtali fought on the
heights of the battlefield.
Jael, a woman with no
military training, stepped into divine purpose with bold obedience.
God honours those who show
up, even when they feel small or unqualified. He celebrates availability more
than ability.
Jesus affirmed the same
principle in the parable of the Good Samaritan in Luke 10:25–37. Two religious
leaders passed by the wounded man, but the Samaritan—unexpected,
overlooked—stopped to help. Heaven still celebrates those who step in when
others step back.
There's danger in
neutrality.
Meroz teaches us that
neutrality in spiritual battles is not neutral. When God is moving, standing
aside is equivalent to resisting Him. Jesus said it plainly in Matthew 12:30,
“Whoever is not with me is against me.”
Silence can be agreement.
Inaction can be disobedience. Delay can be dishonour.
In Esther 4:14, Mordecai
warned Esther that refusing to act would not stop God’s plan, but it would cost
her the privilege of being part of it. God’s purposes will always prevail, but
our participation determines our reward.
What does “I won’t help”
mean today?
We echo Meroz when:
- We see a need but say,
“Someone else will do it.”
- We feel the Spirit
prompting us to pray, give, serve, or speak, but we delay.
- We avoid involvement
because it is inconvenient, costly, or uncomfortable.
- We choose personal comfort
over kingdom responsibility.
“I won’t help” may sound
like: “I’m too busy.” “It’s not my
calling.”
“I don’t want to get
involved.” “Let someone else handle it.”
But heaven hears it
differently.
The beauty of Judges 5 is
that God does not need human help, yet He invites us to partner with Him.
Helping the Lord is not about God lacking strength—it is about us stepping into
the honour of participating in His victory.
When we say “yes”: We grow,
mature, experience God’s power, and become part of a testimony bigger than
ourselves.
When we say, “I won’t help,”
we miss the miracle.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- Where has God been prompting me to step in, but I have been hesitant, passive, or silent?
- What fears, excuses, or comforts have kept me from helping in God’s work?
- How can I cultivate a heart that responds quickly and joyfully when God calls?
PRAYER: Lord, give me a
willing heart. Deliver me from passivity, fear, and excuses. Help me to
recognise Your call and respond with courage and obedience. May I never be
counted among those who refused to help, but among those who showed up, stood
up, and partnered with You. Use me for Your glory. Amen.
