PIDGIN NOW YOU SEE IT, NOW YOU DON’T!
Jonah 4:6–10
Den God make one small plant
grow kover Jonah, so dat e go fit rest well. So Jonah happy well-well, bikos of
di plant.
7 But di next day, God send
one worm kom chop, distroy and kill di plant. 8 Wen sun start to shine, God kon
send one hot breeze kom from east. Di sun dey shine for Jonah head and e nearly
faint. So as Jonah dey vex, bikos di plant wey kover en head don die, e kon
sey, “E betta make I die, dan dis life wey I dey live so.” 9 But God tell am,
“Wish rite yu get to dey vex bikos of di small plant?” Jonah ansa, “I get evry
rite to vex till I die!” 10 Den God tell am, “If yu dey vex sey I kill dis
plant wey grow for only one nite kon die di next day; plant wey yu nor do
anytin for or make grow,
E get times for life when
something go just appear suddenly, blessing, breakthrough, relationship,
position, comfort and before you know am, e don disappear. Now you see am, now
you no see am. Na exactly wetin Jonah experience outside Nineveh city. After he
preach judgment, Jonah sit down dey wait make he see wetin go happen. Bible
say, “The Lord God prepare one plant and make am grow over Jonah, so e fit give
shade for him head” for verse 6. Jonah happy well‑well. The comfort come unexpected, come on
time, and e satisfy am deep.
But the next morning, God
prepare worm wey attack the plant, and the plant wither. Then He prepare hot
east wind, and the sun beat Jonah head until e weak. The same God wey give the
shade allow am disappear. The same comfort wey look permanent turn temporary.
Jonah joy turn to anger, and him relief turn to frustration.
This moment expose one truth
wey many believers dey struggle with: we often dey celebrate the gift more than
the Giver. Jonah rejoice because of the plant, but he no rejoice because of God
mercy for Nineveh people. He value him own comfort pass the souls wey God wan
save. The plant na lesson — one living parable — wey show Jonah how earthly
comfort dey fragile and how dangerous misplaced priorities fit be.
God ask Jonah, “E right for
you to vex because of the plant?” for verse 9. Jonah say yes. But God answer am
with gentle correction: Jonah get pity for plant wey he no plant, water, and grow.
Yet he no get compassion for the people of Nineveh according to verses 10–11.
The plant temporary, but the souls of the people eternal.
This na the heart of the
message: God sometimes dey give us temporary comfort to expose permanent issue
for our heart.
Sometimes God dey allow
something appear — job, relationship, season of ease, no be because na the
final blessing, but because na tool for teaching. And sometimes He dey allow am
disappear, no be as punishment, but as revelation. The plant no be the problem;
na Jonah heart be the problem. The disappearance of the plant reveal wetin
Jonah value pass.
We see this pattern
throughout Scripture with Abraham and Isaac — God give Isaac, then ask Abraham
make he lay am for altar for Genesis 22. The test no be about Isaac; na about
Abraham heart.
Job wealth and health: now
you see am, now you no see am. Yet Job declare, “The Lord give, and the Lord
take away; blessed be the name of the Lord” for Job 1:21.
The manna for wilderness
appear every day and disappear every day according to Exodus 16. God use am to
teach dependence, no be comfort.
God no dey cruel; He dey intentional.
He dey use temporary things to reveal eternal truth. He dey use comfort wey dey
disappear to expose hidden attachment. He dey use sudden change to shift our
focus from wetin dey fade to wetin dey everlasting.
Jonah love the shade pass
the souls. He love comfort pass calling. He love temporary pass eternal. And
God, for Him mercy, disturb Jonah comfort to restore Jonah perspective.
What if the thing wey
disappear from your life no ever suppose stay?
What if him purpose na to
teach, no be to remain?
What if God remove am to
reveal wetin you no fit see when e still dey there?
Sometimes the plant must
wither so the heart fit wake up. Sometimes the shade must vanish so the soul
fit grow. Sometimes comfort must shake so you fit embrace calling.
God no be just the God wey
dey give; He be God wey dey grow us. And growth dey come through things wey
appear and disappear. The question no be whether the plant go stay. The
question na whether we go learn wetin the plant come teach us.

frustration?

deeper lesson God dey teach me through something wey appear and then
disappear?
